I have been mostly Paleo / Primal for about 6 months now. Every once in a while (it happened last night) My feet swell up, and the next morning, my face is rather puffy. Has anyone experienced this, or have any ideas of what could trigger it?

Side note - Yesterday's food consisted of a few eggs, some beef jerky, sauerkraut, cucumber, a little dark chocolate-87%, and some nuts. I have never had any food allergies that I know of.

Unsure if it is related, but I also have a lot of trouble with my arms "falling asleep" on me during sleep, and tingling sensation in my hands every once in a while.

Any info is appreciated

Todd, one thing I am not sure of is if this problem is a new problem since going paleo or you have always had it and it's just that paleo has not succeeded in getting rid of it. Whatever the case, that would be one of the clues. Other than that, Stephen is right, you need to keep a journal of everything that touches your body or goes into your mouth, food, medicines, soap, shampoo, shaving, putting flea powder on the cat, visiting grandma's house, etc. There are just too many variables to remember all of them unless you write them down.

Other than that, I would definitely start plotting your food intake into fitday.com (it's free) and see if you are lacking any specific nutrients. Especially check your magnesium intake as magnesium deficiency can cause weird nerve sensations.

Also, if you are on any medications, google for known side effects to see if water retention is on the list.

HOwever, kinda sounds like allergy to me and they say that is the most common cause of sporadic water retention. The question is, what is causing the allergy? That is where the journaling comes in.

hard to easily answer, without far more information, could be circulation issues, or allergy issues. We need to know more about your entire diet, Omega3-6 ratio, etc. to help more. When I was having issues, I kept a Food Journal, kept logs on what I ate when and how I felt shortly after and the next day or 2. helped me discover which foods agree with me and which really mess me up.

Circulation, Allergy, and a host of other health issues literally disappeared overnight when I very very strictly cut out Omega 6 foods. Almost everything is Grass Fed/Wild, and just avoid the foods that have more than a small amount of Omega 6.

What foods are highest in Omegas 6's? I know nuts are right? – Todd Aug 21 2010 at 19:54
Grains, vegetable oils... – Stephen-Aegis Aug 22 2010 at 1:48
Yes, and nuts are also high in 6s – Eva Aug 22 2010 at 3:10

Something quite similar happens to me after eating something that contains too much histamin - I'm rather sensitiv to histamin. In addition to swollen feet or hands and face my heart beats faster and sometimes I get headache.

The food you consumed yesterday contained quite a lot of histamin.

have you tried going very low Omega 6? Ive seen a very large correlation with reduced O6 and Reduced allergies... – Stephen-Aegis Aug 21 2010 at 20:14
I reduced O6 as far as possible - instead of other vegetable oils I use coconut oil, pastured butter, grasfed beef... This spring was the first in 20 years completely without hay fever... but some of my other allergies still persist... – Kikilula Aug 21 2010 at 22:48

Too much salt? I went through a period where my knees themselves, legs from the knees down, fingers, and toes all were swelling up. Felt a slight swelling in the lower abdomen, too. Turns out i was just over-salting all my food.

Dont get me wrong, i know that good quality salt is good for us, im not a mainstream antisalt person. I was just being pretty silly and really salting my food. I had just fallen in to such a habit that i didnt put two and two together. Then im talking to an accupuncurist and asking her about it and right away shes like, do you salt your food a lot?

I stopped going crazy and all the daily swelling went straight away. Totally worked.

I will say though that i think a change in pressure from weather makes me knees feel slightly swollen. Nothing like what i described above or what you seem to be dealing with, though. Side question: anyone else have weather-sensitive joints?

You are probably salt sensitive. Most of the population can process a lot of salt easily with no apparent side effects. However, a few percent of the population seem to have problems with it. – Eva Aug 22 2010 at 3:13
