since i cannot seem to manipulate my weight lower no matter what i try, and i still have a few digestive issues that come up occasionally (though nothing too serious), i'm considering that there may be some food sensitivies that are hindering my metabolism / weight loss. i have a few culprits in mind, and am starting a food diary to see if i can figure out any patterns in foods that make me feel less than great. also, in my googling i came across the ALCAT food allergy/sensitivity test. has anyone tried it? it seems to be controversial, but i'm not willing to write it off as non-sense quite yet. any input appreciated!

I have done it and was shocked by the results! My nutritionist ordered the test and she believes in it, so I felt comfortable with it. After eliminating the offending foods my seasonal allergies (itchy nose & mouth year around) are nearly gone, as is the gas and bloating. A food journal is great too, but I never would have eliminated some of the foods identified (chicken & tomatoes). After a period of elimination, ALCAT will retest for free. Oh, and I've also dropped 10 pounds with little effort, even over the holidays.

I did it a few years ago and I thought it was very frustrating! It said I am intolerant to everything, except Turkey! No exaggeration! And I did the largest panel that tests them all~ I felt very hopeless when it came to eating after that, it was so hard choosing what to eat, and the stress was probably more harmful that any of it.

I would spend my money elsewhere.

that would be frustrating...did you try to follow the recommendations for a while anyways? and if so, did you feel a difference? – meret Jan 13 2012 at 0:56
Nope I didn't notice any help.. but this was b4 I was paleo. I am thinking, that I was just highly inflammatory and so I probably responded like every food was a "threat" at that time. I think being paleo, fixes a lot of those issues on its own, and I am now "naturally" able to tell on my own where my intolerances are. – Amanda Jan 13 2012 at 17:10
I can also say that I no longer have seasonal allergies by switching to paleo, whereas I used to have them horribly as well. Have you tried Intermittent fasting to try to reach your desired weight? – Amanda Jan 13 2012 at 17:12
yea, i have. i did the leangains style approach, and in fact still do most days. it didn't budge my weight at all. – meret Jan 16 2012 at 14:58
