Seems like beef has slowly been going up over the past year. Pork is still inexpensive, chicken has only risen slightly.

Is there a website that lists current market prices for meats? It would really help to be able to plan meals if one is on a tight budget, especially if a meat is increasing in price you can then stock up while it's still affordable.

It's frustrating having to rely on a store's weekly ad. How do I know that their sale prices are really a good deal when I don't have an idea of what the meat is really worth?

I still have my rancher that I go to for Grassfed beef and pastured poultry/pork. Short drive to bradenton 3-4 times a year and you'd be all set... and cutting out the middleman. – Joshua Mar 10 2012 at 15:40
But Josh, don't you have to buy an entire half-side at a time? Not sure if we could front up the money for that all at once, not to mention having to buy a chest freezer :/ – Nemesis Mar 10 2012 at 17:16

If you want grass fed, try google searching around where you live for farms that sell it. Or farmers markets where the farm is far away but they bring it there on weekends. Find out if they will give you a deal on bulk purchases. Usually, I can find grass fed beef for 1/2 the grocery store price from a respected farm in FL.

Otherwise, if you buying grocery store meat, like beef, buy the stuff thats on sale that needs to get sold that day, its perfectly fine, freeze it or eat it. It will usually say $18.99 NOW $8.99 or something similar.

With the fluctuation in prices from area to area and state to state I think it is up to an individual to track prices in their area so they know when a sale price is OK or really good.

Most people who are on a tight budget get very good at sniffing out deals.

Lately, I've been eating more & more game meat to fit in with my budget. Here in Australia, Kangaroo & Rabbit is very cheap so I start with those first & buy a few meals worth, then I pick some offal such as chicken liver as that is also very cheap. Then, depending on how much money I have left for the week, I will add a few cheaper cuts of meat/fish to round out the week.

Also, Bones for bone-broth are bought about once very 3 weeks & you can even get them free at some butchers. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, they leave quite a bit of meat on them which can be used in soup!

Find out what game meat/offal is cheap in your area & use that predominately. Not only is it cheaper, but it's going to be much better for you too!
