Is there anyone from Quebec or Canada on this forum ?

If so, where do you get your high-quality food :

Grass-fed beef and non-industrial meats (good bacon, etc)
Himalayan Salt
high quality eggs
wild-caught fish
raw milk (it's illegal to sell raw milk here, but is there any trick to get some ?)
...

I live in Montreal, and am wondering if there are any affordable options to get high-quality food.

Finding pastured meat & eggs is actually pretty easy in Canada. Just drive around until you see a bunch of animals standing in a field, then go up to the farmhouse and ask them about their meat. Most farmers are very friendly and proud of what they do. If they don't have what you need, chances are they know someone who does. For pastured meats & eggs in Ottawa I buy from Funny Duck Farms - http://www.funnyduckfarms.com/seasonal_foods and Grazing Days - http://www.grazingdays.com/

Wild caught fish can be a little harder, but I can find fresh wild trout and other freshwater fish at a good grocery store. I can usually only find farmed salmon this far from an actual ocean, so I don't often eat it. I see trout as basically freshwater salmon, so I'm happy with that.

I'm in Montreal as well. Do to farmer's market and talk with the owners and people there. You can get raw milk if you're a regular at some places (ex. local farmers at Jean Talon Market and the likes).

Not sure abut MTL on all accounts. For Ottawa:

Grass-fed beef and non-industrial meats (good bacon, etc) : Sasloves is where I get my meat http://www.saslovesmeat.com/byward-market/catalog/grassfed-beef. They also sell high quality eggs from Bekings Farms. They are delicious and I highly recommend. Also would recommend Aubreys Meats in the market -- just talk to the butcher for more info.

Himalayan Salt - Rainbow foods, Natural Food Pantry, Kardish

high quality eggs Sasloves, Rainbow Foods

wild-caught fish Lapointe in the market (they should have something I would think), Market Organics, Ottawa Organic Farmers Market, Whalesbone

raw milk Try asking around at Ottawa Organic Farmers Market. I get raw milk from a local farmer for my boyfriend. I stopped having dairy after I still had bad reactions even after switching to raw. We own a piece of the cow technically so it's not 'illegal' if you will. You may be able to make a similar deal.

Hopefully that's somewhat helpful. Maybe you have similar stores in MTL?

The one place I have heard of in MTL is Viandes et plus in Hudson. Apparently has grass fed beef as well as pork, chicken and lamb all raised hormone and antibiotic free. They are also supposed to have chickens on site laying eggs for sale. www.viandesetplus.com

Raw milk- get a cow! Otherwise it is hard to source in Canada, at least where we live in northern BC.

Wild fish is easy for us when we are in Canada- we have good friends who fish on the ocean and they share with us (we give them fresh homegrown veggies and berries in return).

Sometimes I can find local eggs and they are usually available at the weekly farmers market too. Our major groceries have "Free Range" eggs but we don't know what the hens are fed.

Grassfed beef is available by the side or quarter, but not usually in our grocery stores.

Things like Himalayan salt and coconut oil are found either at the Health Food store or Safeway. Wish we had a Trader Joe's!

We live in Canada half the year and Mexico half the year.

From what I hear, you can get raw milk if it is for your pet... find a dairy and tell em you have like 50 cats...! Haha I am sure they would be happy to sell you some, they just don't want to face any penalties. Eatwild is a great suggestion.

Morgan farm in Weir, 80 minutes North West of Montreal, raise and sell pastured organic beef and boar. You can visit any time, cows still have their long horns! Pretty cool.

I'm in Ottawa and THANK YOU FOR THIS POST.

All I have is this: Himalayan salt from Natural food pantry/loblaws. and Wild fish from the organic farmer's market that goes on every saturday. Will definitely be getting some grass-fed meat soon from the links posted.

Does anyone know a grass-fed meat source that ensures that the animals are humanely slaughtered(oxymoron).. but you know, quick, painless death, no choking, no weird stuff.

Are there any Canadians/Quebecois out there ?
