I know that CrossFit is out there and has strong ties to Paleo-types and is favoured by them. But I was just thinking about the ideal gym. Because I am reading The Primal Blueprint and following Mark's Daily Apple, I began thinking about how you could set up the "perfect" gym to support it.

I was thinking... . Indoor running track with "countdown clocks" at strategic points, together with a light system where the edge of the track was on a continuous loop of Green lights for 20 seconds, then Red for 10 seconds, to facilitate Tabatas . An outdoor running track just the same...but outdoors
. A "hill" section outdoors to do hill sprints
. Some cardio machines also for "sprints" eg rowers, bikes
. Loads of free weights, suspension straps, Viprs etc
. Nutrition classes, lectures on Primal eating
. Outdoor sports field to play ultimate frisbee, touch rugby and other games on
. Teams organised among members for semi-organised play
. Supplements sold (but only Paleo approved)
. Maybe a cafe selling tasty Primal/Paleo foods
. etc
. etc

So, 3 questions:
. Would you join?
. What else would you add?
. What would you call it? "Grok's Gym"? "The Cave"?

Add a climbing rope and some gymnastics-style equipment (like o-rings) for playing on, and I'd join. I love your idea of the red and green lights to facilitate Tabatas, and a hill section for hill sprints. – Sara S. Jan 16 2012 at 18:18

I wouldn't join because gyms just aren't my idea of paleo. I'd take a forest near a beach or a lake any day, and a few good friends to hike, run and swim with. Add in a hill or two and that's all you need to stay fit. – gydle Jan 16 2012 at 18:22
I liked the idea of green and red strip lights (there's some dangerous thoughts for killing time when I'm crossing the Atlantic) but I'm not sure it's the best way to 'sprint', leastwise not for everyone. – PrimalDanny Jan 16 2012 at 19:32

@PrimalDanny, agree not for everyone but it's a good start. I want clocks you can see from every point so that you can do your own intervals too. Otherwise you can ignore them and do your own thing... @gydle...agree, if you have them available. I was thinking more of those people in London (or any other large city) for maybe 2 or 3 workouts a week, with others done in the fresh air at weekends etc... – Gary Jan 17 2012 at 12:30
@Gary, you in the UK. Let me know if you want someone to help out with your project if you ever start it. – AlohaSpeck Jan 17 2012 at 15:45

Get Your Grok On at 'Groks GYM and Paleo Feast' <- Or something.

This would go over great in a city where its not easy to 'get away'...

Take 1 big warehouse or empty Big Box Store (there should be plenty of these available)

. Make a 'nature reserve' inside the thing. Create a 'gym' inside the nature reserve. Enjoy

Add lots of dirt. Add 'ponds' with fish and a waterfall. Add a lot of jungle type plants, ferns, palm trees(the ones that make coconuts), banana trees, whatever.

Add rock climbing near the waterfall.(with safety gear of course)

Create 'paths' to run on around the perimeter. 2 straight aways and 2 curves, one with a big hill and a no hill by-pass for those that cant go uphill.

Add some birds.

Post some no camping signs.

Wouldn't have to cool the place down like a health club where its too cold. Sweating is good for you and people who use gyms typically sit in the AC too much anyway. The waterfall will create high humidity 24/7. Big fans moving alot of air would be great.

Interspersed throughout can be heavy bags, punching bags and areas for that kind of stuff.

Put in a 'free weight'/crossfit type area, a cardio area, a small eatery(on the second floor overlooking this whole crazy thing), and an outside 'caged in area' and BOOM! your done.

I guess part of the crossfit/free weight area can be on the outside, or make that the mobility area or a mix.

Income would be from monthly memberships, sales of products, and the eatery. If it was big enough, a 'classroom' could be inside this thing too (or) on the second floor overlooking it too.

Id be down to move and actually run something like this.

This would not cost that much money to put together, I used to own a real Landscaping company and it wouldn't be all that big of a deal to pull this off. Even the waterfall is super easy to do and can be quite large.

Sounds fantastic! – AlohaSpeck Jan 16 2012 at 22:52
@Mash, and yet you didn't upvote it? :P ... I think this sounds great, too. A lot of very smart design here. – Sara S. Jan 17 2012 at 1:33
Sorry, I am getting lazy with my upvotes. I feel like I am just upvoting everything I read. I have lost the romance of it all. – AlohaSpeck Jan 17 2012 at 9:29

I think there's been a bunch of ideas on this on MDA, including Mark's own. I tend to favour finding a good bit of outdoors, but might come up with a business plan for you later ;)

We have this... http://goape.co.uk/what-is-goape

Wow, that looks really fun! Anything like that in the US? – Sara S. Jan 17 2012 at 1:38
Yeah but no but yeah but no but...have you done GoApe. I have. It is good but you spend more than half the time WAITING AROUND...gets very dull after the first 10 minutes... However, a GoApe style course around the edges of Bill's warehouse and waterfall would be great... – Gary Jan 17 2012 at 12:32

Actually, I was thinking the exact same thing, however I would have more of an obstacle course: Think of it like this, with Jumping horse competitions they have an obstacle, then they run to another obstacle. This would be a great thing for people to do as well. Plus have some instructors to help teach how to overcome the obstacle course. The membership agreement would ensure the gym is not liable for injuries (hopefully people will be smart about it, but you never know). I would also try to position it on land that has a lake for some water exercises as well.

As for selling stuff, not only would I offer supplements, but I would also offer paleo items that you cannot find. For example, salad dressings. I either have to order on-line or make my own (which I can do, no biggie). However, there are times when you just want to be able to pick it up.

That being said, I think a better option would be to design a kit you can set up in a small urban yard, so people can order it and set it up at home. I would design it with kids and adults in mind for family fun. Start with a simple set, with lots of add-ons for additional purchase.

Now for names: How about Grok & Roll

I'm in heaven based on your description. The tabata track sounds absolutely amazing. I'd add:

  • A low bouldering/climbing/swinging area (as to not require belaying & harnesses)
  • A simulated hunting tract where you can chase and spear a deer/bear/wooly mammoth/sabertooth tiger
  • A sand track for beach-like running
  • Moving water (lazy river-esque) for cool-downs or work
  • Various obstacles from different environments (sand dunes, jungle trees, waterfall)

A paleo-friendly supply store would be great, too. I always have to tiptoe my way around even the "health" food stores for all the sweetened and processed stuff.

My name it Rob Resnik, my wife after years of suffering from IBS, daily headaches, 5 to 6 sinus infections, rashes, acid reflux, cankers sores than finally being told it looked like she had MS. I discovered the Paleo diet 7yrs ago on a web-site called Direct MS. I got my wife off just gluten and dairy at first and her symptoms started disappearing, I had my youngest child-who was four at the time tested for celiac, he tested positive. We have been Paleo/gluten free since. I am on a mission to educate people to take control of their own health. I own a gym in Gardnerville, NV I own the registred trademark-"Paleo Boot Camp"I am trying to network with like minded people, with the possibility of expanding Paleo Boot Camp someday. We can change the world for the better and go against the grain that is making our world sick. I'm hoping to partner up with people who have the skills to make this happen. Paleo Boot Camp is a gym that uses full body exercises with tools such as kettle-bells, dumbbells, medicine balls, plyometrics, barbells, exercise bands, and many more. I have lived and learned the life of fitness for the last 25 years. Our goal is to teach people a safe, efficent and effective way of training. Feel free to contact me at Paleobootcamp@yahoo.com Thanks Rob
