My eyes are happy, anyone else?

F.lux is softening the brightness, contrast and colors on my computer monitors as the sun sets. Its got to be the most paleo-computer thing ever invented.

Why didn't I think of this

Yes, I like it. I've seen other questions about this and that was the story there too. – Nance Jan 16 2012 at 22:58

I love it. And I keep the daytime settings lower than the default because I read that computer screens are even brighter than daylight. I keep mine at 5000K during the day and as low as possible (2700K) after sundown. My eyes are happy. My brain is happy. – Toni Jan 17 2012 at 3:41

I turn it on in the evening. It's useless for doing photoshop work or watching movies as it messes up with color balance, though. – Wisper Jan 17 2012 at 13:05
I like the halogen lighting at night. I feel it more soothing to the eye. – Lady_Arwen Jan 17 2012 at 15:40

Hmm. I've been using f.lux for a while now. Conceptually it makes lots of sense to me, but I don't know if I'm as enthusiastic as you are. Glad to have it, but I haven't exactly kidded myself that it makes my late night computer use "paleo" in any sense of the word!

@Beth, I concede this is a pretty subjective question and I haven't seen any hard data. Anecdotally, I do think it's easier on my eyes and I definitely have less trouble falling asleep when I use f.lux. I recently had to get a new PC and I forgot about f.lux at first and noticed problems--which reminded me. :-)) – Nance Jan 16 2012 at 23:08

I have f.lux on my PCs (work and home), a break reminder of some sort (forget the name- it pops up every so often to tell me to look around, take a break, stretch) on my work computer, and a f.lux-ish thing on my Android phone called NeyetLight (available in the market). For bonus dork points, I use the 'dawn song' of the American Robin as my morning alarm (noted here because my phone is my alarm), and the chirp of a Downy Woodpecker as my text message alert. Both are species native to my area- Michigan. I'm thinking of using a wood frog or bullfrog's alarm call for calendar reminders (suggestions welcome, tho). Maybe not precisely paleo, but easier on my ears than most other ringtones out there. :)

Yeah, I use a crow for one email account and an eagle for the other one - THAT one will get your attention! – JCB Jan 18 2012 at 15:56
thanks for the NeyetLight reference.. i have been looking for something for my android! – Fonda Jan 20 2012 at 21:23

I use RedShift which does the same thing but I can run it off the command-line. I am not entirely sure how this benefits me if I work in an office that has the same level of light all day.

But it does give PaleoHacks have a nice peachy glow and it reminds me that it is time to leave the office.

If anyone is interested in the latitude and longitude for London, UK.

mash@specialk:~$ redshift -l 51.32:0.5

Heh, nice to see redshift mentioned here as an alternative (I wrote it). – Jon Lund Steffensen Jan 17 2012 at 10:14
Nice! What are the chances of that. :) – AlohaSpeck Jan 17 2012 at 10:48
I meant to use f.lux when I go Linux but since a PaleoHacker wrote an alternative, RedShift it is. Thanks man ! – Huray Jan 17 2012 at 13:53
I have used redshift for years, even pre-paleo! Love it :) – stephthegeek Jan 17 2012 at 16:53
which version would best run on a Mac? I haven't Linuxed in a while... – Caleb the Hobbit Jan 19 2012 at 17:53

Been using it for quite some time now. The only issue I have with it is that there's no separate settings for mornings, since I usually getup before the sun, so I have to click "Disable for an Hour" a couple of times.

I just go into the 'settings' and re-set to where I want it. For example, I am also a VERY early riser -- well before the sun -- and turn it to a mid-range setting for early morning use. When it's cloudy/rainy, I also reduce the setting on f.lux to something suitably less bright than the normal 'daylight' setting. – Firestorm Jan 17 2012 at 15:09

I've been using it for a while. It's really handy, except for when I'm editing photos after sundown. Totally screws up the white balance and color of my photos... so I keep hitting "disable for an hour".

Yep. The worst is that it's not enough to disable or even exit, I have to reload the screen calibration. Not a big deal, but would be nice if it gave control back elegantly. – Wisper Jan 17 2012 at 13:07

I love it, handy if you have to read a lot on the screen. Been using it over half a year now. I sneaked it on my parents' PCs as well, they didn't notice it, just said "did you change something? my eyes feel better"

+1 for being sneaky and doing something good at the same time. :) – raydawg Jan 17 2012 at 11:23

I would be thrilled out of my mind to have f.lux or RedShift available for my iPad and android phone.

The best workaround I've seen for the iPad is to get a piece of red translucent plastic, available at serious camera shops and perhaps lighting stores, and cut it down to size to fit inside y cover. That relies on you remembering to slot it in every night, though. – JitzGrrl Jan 18 2012 at 5:33

I like it and have been using it for probably 9 months. It only takes a moment for my eyes to adjust when it comes on in the evening or shuts off in the morning. I think it is definitely more comfortable for my eyes. I don't know that it helps me sleep better as I have never had problems sleeping.

My Mac doesn't like it. After I installed f.lux I started having problems awaking my computer from sleep mode. It wouldn't wake up at all and I kept having to do a hard restart.

I only downloaded it to try it out and see what all the fuss was about.

My solution is to limit overall computer usage and take adequate breaks when I have to be on for any length of time.

I have trouble with it on the mac too... Just doesn't want to listen. – Korion Jan 17 2012 at 11:36
Never had a problem with it on my Mac, works perfectly. – raydawg Jan 18 2012 at 19:14

I have it and really like it. I sometimes used to wear sunglasses in the past just before bed time to really dim down the screen. I hate bright lights which is a bane living in Japan, they really love brights - blinding lights. Big domed neon lights in living areas, convenience stores are insanely bright at night. This country is the most sleep deprived place imaginable and the bright lights are frequently being brought up by some as a contributing factor: I have seen several news stories about too much light disrupting sleep. My students proudly claim that they get 2-3 hours sleep a night. Fools, and they wont listen to my advice. link text

As for F-lux, works fine for me on PC - with a LG Super LED monitor, it has very sharp bright whites, so F-lux is gold. To those who tried it and hated it, what kind of monitor were you using it with? I think that could be a factor.

While I like f.lux's function, it is a little unsettling to see the large amount of data it sends to/from the internet when running. Also, is is somewhat system memory intensive, at least on the previous generation of computers. Finally, if you are booting up later on in the evening f.lux doesn't kick in until you log in - prior to that point one tends to get zapped with Windows 7 intense blue light.

I plan to look into RedShift.

what program are you using to see what its sending/receiving? – Bill1102inf Jan 19 2012 at 2:36

I really do love it. occasionally I'll restart my computer and forget to launch it, then in the evening I'll wonder what's wrong with my computer.

launch it? why not set it to launch when you boot your computer? makes life easy. – FuelRestMotion Jan 18 2012 at 13:49

I have f.lux on my mac and on my work pc (windows). The only problems I see is that on the Mac version, it only affects my main monitor and not my secondary. On the Windows app it works for both displays.

Every evening I...

1) ...make my laptop screen very dark. I minimize brightness, contrast and gamma from the graphics settings.

2) ...wear my "high contrast blue blocker" glasses that I ordered from eBay.

Absolutely hated it. I didn't really find any benefit in it and I kept getting annoyed when it would start to dim my screen at 5:30 in the afternoon. Uninstalled with no regrets :)

I tried it, and coulnd't stand it. Uninstalled and filed under 'silly'.
