Still new to the paleo type diet, experiencing a few pretty big improvements. I've always ate pretty low fat for years, and after going high fat I've noticed a number of problems with my skin clear up pretty quickly (including pretty severe dryness) that have lingered for quite some time. Can this be attributed to higher fat in the diet, absence of wheat, both? Certain types of fat best for skin?
My skin became very "bright" when I first switched. My first impression in the mirror was very different than it had been on SAD. I am pale-complected but had always had a subdued tone so I was shocked to see it become so bright.
I was eating quite a bit of fat before, including animal fat, so I tend to credit the lack of wheat. However, it's true that I was eating products that included industrial oils and soy, etc., so those could be factors as well.
Anyhow, one of my favorite parts of the new lifestyle is that friends who haven't seen me lately always say, "You look so good!" and I think it's part skin tone and part weight loss.
My skin is more tolerant of sunlight, i.e. I got less sunburn this summer. I attribute this to replacing olive oil with saturated fat (grass-fed butter, beef dripping (tallow) and pork and bacon fat). My skin is thicker, heals more quickly and is more even-toned. The shadows under my eyes have (nearly?) gone.
If I cut back a lot on carbs, my skin gets a bit dry, which I don't mind too much as it's always been a bit on the oily side. Adding carbs back soon reverses the effect.
Like Panteleimon, I have easier tanning, less burning, and faster healing of blemishes (which are rare now anyway, generally only appearing if I have dairy). Friends and family comment constantly on how much brighter I look; one friend keeps using the word "radiant." :)
Going off-plan makes me look puffy and tired. I attribute the changes to shedding toxins and increasing saturated fat. PUFA's definitely have a negative effect on how I look; so do dairy and gluten.
Glad Paleo does well by you, too!
Paleo improved my skin (no acne on my face anymore :) ) but overtime it became worse. I got more tired and therefore I looked very puffy with dark circles under my eyes and it got more oily. First I tried to cut back Dairy, because everyone said it's bad and i generally lowered my carb intake. It wasn't helpful at all, quite the contrary.
The last months i added back some safe starches and it got better. Lot's of fruits and avoiding added fats made me look more bright and puffines was gone. It has to do something with low thyroid function i guess. Today i lean towards a "Ray Peat Diet" even with lots of pasteurized Milk in it and no green Vegetables and skin looks perfect and i feel the best.
The worst thing I've ever done to my skin was drinking Tea, especially Green Tea and Kombucha. I looked like a nightmare during that time.
