Whenever I reintroduce eggs into my diet I gain weight. They are delicious and great for you, but this is my problem. I have odd digestive issues (alternating) and have gained nearly 10lbs in 4 months, which is abnormal. The only thing I have added is eggs. What gives?

Are you eating the same amount of calories per day as you were before reintroducing eggs? – Warren D Jan 20 2012 at 11:09
The exact same. I use fitday to track. – Ashley Jan 21 2012 at 4:52

I love eggs. I think they are great for my diet.I even snack on hard-boiled eggs. But that's me. What I am coming around to believe is that each one of us has certain singularities, which means that we have to experiment a bit with what works for us and what does not work for us.

For instance, for me, eating cheese, causes weight gain. When I avoid it, I start to lose weight. If I eat in moderate amounts, I will maintain, if I overdo it, I will gain weight. And I am talking about a beautiful local semi-cured goat cheese made from raw milk, salt and rennet.

So to sum up, if it happens to you, it happens to you. Take note of it and eat accordingly.

It's sad really. No gluten, no dairy, no eggs :( – Ashley Jan 21 2012 at 4:51

Egg white intolerance is fairly common, and if your body doesn't like something, it's response is to elevate cortisol and histamine to combat the substance it isn't tolerating well. When cortisol is elevated, or inflammation is present, you will retain more water and weight.

As much as I like eggs, they are not integral to eating paleo, and if I had similar experiences I wouldn't hesitate to try different breed eggs such as duck or quail, and if those also caused a reaction, I would eliminate them altogether.

I have a friend that used to get really bad gas and bloating from eggs specifically. I suggested he eat just the yolks and the issues were less severe but still occurred. He eliminated eggs completely and solved the problem.

Have you tried just eating the yolks?

No, why do you think that would be better? – Ashley Jan 20 2012 at 7:15
The egg whites are not tolerate well by some people. – Eric Jan 20 2012 at 8:08
Been meaning to ask eric...do you bother cooking your yolks? – JayJay Jan 20 2012 at 15:49
My new favorite way is soft boiled. – Eric Jan 20 2012 at 17:25
I'm allergic to eggs and suspect it might be the whites, but the reaction is very delayed (I put on water weight, get itchy and acne after a few days) so I don't really dare. How do you know that the whites and yolk is fully separated except for when hard boiling? – Harlekini Jan 21 2012 at 1:10

Eggs not only irritate my stomach and my skin, but they also help me to gain weight. I have had to eliminate them except for the rare occasion b/c I think I have developed some sort of allergic response to them. It is unfortunate because they're so quick and easy to prepare.

If at all you want to eat scrambled eggs, I would suggest you take out the yolk and only use the egg white.

Egads! Anything but this. For more than one reason. First reason - most egg allergies are due to intolerance in the whites, not the yolk. Second reason - all of the nutrition of eggs are in the yolk, the whites are simply empty protein calories. – Joshua Jan 31 2012 at 14:33
