So I've been bad with my workouts lately... as in... not doing them. Part of the reason is that I just moved apartments and am preparing for the arrival of our first child in a few weeks. Another part is that (in Finland, where I live) it has been pretty cold, and now it is super snowy (about 4-5 inches fall everyday).
BUT! Finns love being outdoors in all weather. As an American, I am finally ready to join up with them.
Unfortunately I won't have too much time to spend outside exercising, so I was wondering how I could spend my time the most wisely! Here are my realistic options:
Ice Skating X-Country Skiing Hiking Snowboarding (Occasionally) Sledding
I won't be able to afford Ice Skates AND Skis (I already have the snowboard), so what's the best option for an efficient "Natural Movement" type workout?
How do you stay moving in this type of weather?
I grew up near mountains and was an avid skier who transitioned to snowboarding, then after an accident that left a nice bit of me and my gear down the slope went to snowshoeing. I love it. Easy to transport, break your own trails, run or walk, throw yourself off banks. Out of all the winter sports it's the easiest to just grab and go with, financially its just the 'shoes - I wear GoreTex gaiters over Asolo hiking boots and then just layer up. Fantastic workout.
You could also do snow angels or devils really fast :)
Definitely body weight exercises in your house, if you have room a jump rope is aces - I have a speed rope that I'll practice double unders in my hallway. Also google "Tabata" as there are some good sets in there that will get that heart up and you feeling great.
Note: For safety when shoeing I always left my route and carried a radio, extra gear wrapped in plastic in my pack so it would stay dry, and snacks/food for that day out plus for a "just in case" scenario.

Do what you enjoy the most and not what you think is the best workout.
Moreover, if you have some kind of pull-up bar, you can also do a super short, intense EDT-style workout in 10-15 minutes, just couple pull-ups with pushups/hspus/dips and do 5 of each every minute (for example). That would be 50 pull-ups and 50 reps of the pushing exercise you chose in just ten minutes. I've had great results with this type of workout. Obviously you can also add squats or jumping rope too to work the whole body. Just scale the time and intensity to your current abilities and try to improve each workout.
I'm sure you can take a few minutes a couple of times a week to do this ;)
I love cross-country skiing in the winter, especially when we have enough snowfall in town that I don't have to drive to do it. It's great exercise, and I've found that the winters I xc-ski regularly I'm much fitter come spring, even if it's only on the weekends. I also like that xc-skiing allows you to adjust the exertion level really easily: sometimes I go slowly, so it's more like a walk, and sometimes I go quickly, more like a jogging pace.
