I am a desperate workaholic and have been resorting to preparing one meal a day in the microwave. The other two meals tend to be Chipotle, and canned red salmon and raw carrots/sweet potatoes, plus a couple of heavy creamy coffees:

6-8 pastured eggs
a handful of hand-ripped scallions
a handful of hand-ripped kale

no, I don't count the hand-ripping as HIIT.

I toss that all in a glass bowl and do several rounds of 70% power 1:15 "cookings," sprinkling a little (gasp) sea salt in the process. It's good... sorta.

Any microwave paleo hacks?

Glad to see I'm not the only one eating Chipotle often... I usually do not but the last few weeks have really sucked. =( Pro tip: if you get just meat plus salsa (nothing else!), you will be charged for the line item value only. It's a little cheaper than paying for the full meal, and there's nothing else that's Paleo-friendly anyway, since even the veggies are cooked in soybean oil. You can even get double meat; they'll just charge you for meat+salsa+extra meat. I pack an avocado for some extra fat. Yes, I'm cheap. =) – JJ Aug 26 2010 at 17:45
I suppose you're missing out on cheese and sour cream, but I have doubts about their quality. – JJ Aug 26 2010 at 17:46
yeah, I skip cheese and sour cream regardless of origin these days. I'm also cheap, and have been "hacking" Chipotle to see what they charge me depending on how I order my "burrito bowl" or "double side of steak." I rarely pay the same amount from day to day. – Zev Averbach Aug 26 2010 at 21:36

Personally, the BirdsEye SteamFresh vegetables are my favorite "hack." Combine a bag of those with two cans of tuna, or leftover chicken, or some other good protein...fastest way to get some good (hot) veggies in a fast meal.

Bacon. Bacon. Bacon.

i second this, it's sadly my go to method most of the time. downside, you lose the drippings. – MikeD Aug 26 2010 at 1:35

I get a bowl. On top I put some kinda not too carby spaghetti sauce topped with some kinda cheese, usually provolone, swiss, or parmesan. On the bottom can go pieces of chicken, nothing, salami, lowcarb bread, tortilla, more cheese, or whatever you can think of that might be good with tomatolike sauce. Or you can skip the sauce and just put something covered in cheese. Cover with paper towel to prevent splatter, and nuke in the micro. Tastes like pizza and very quick to make. Basic premise, almost everything tastes good with melted cheese on it.

Not a microwave fan. Precook and eat cold or find another heating method, toaster oven?

From nutrient loss to radiation to chemical leeching. It's no surprise Russia banned them. I try to avoid them the best I can

seems to be less definitive than that: marksdailyapple.com/microwave-safety Mercola is not on my guru list... – Zev Averbach Aug 27 2010 at 19:51
still discourages it and basically states: we dunno, but use it limited at best. I avoid it heavily. You can find tons of studies that show what it does to blood, cell makeup etc. Im not a huge mercola fan, but that sums up alot of the concerns all on one page. – Stephen-Aegis Aug 27 2010 at 22:55

all a microwave does is vibrate the water molecules inside food. There is no "radiation" per se. At least the way that loaded term is normally used. If microwaves (electromagnetic energy) are radiation, then so is the energy in your electric oven. The wavelength of microwaves are just the right length to spin the polar water molecules a half rotation as the waves interact with them. So the water molecules start turning back and forth and heating up, heating the food as they do so. Some foods, with lots of free water, heat nicely in the microwave. Others do not. – Domer88 Aug 30 2010 at 18:15
