Hello. I am having some success restoring weight lost due to an eating disorder and am getting close to no longer being underweight. I am wondering if a leptin reset would be a good idea, to fix my metabolism which I assume is still not functioning properly (I haven't gotten my period back yet). Trying to eat more and recover is very stressful and I would like it to be over as soon as possible, and I was thinking a leptin reset might help. Thoughts?

ETA- If I were to do a leptin reset, would I need to modify it at all, seeing as how I need to gain weight instead of losing or maintaining it like a lot of people who do the reset?

@blur I don't think you'd need to modify it. Just make sure you eat as suggested and eat nutrient dense foods. It would help you establish a new eating routine. – Nance Jan 22 2012 at 1:02

get weight restored, see your doctor helping your recovery and get tests, then decide what you need to do. weight restoration is not a number, it is a place, mental and physical that your blood work can reflect. if it isnt up to par, hormones are not high enough, then you are not 'done' or weight restored. do NOT hinder your recovery by trying to follow a protocol. it is not for someone who still needs to gain weight in recovery, regardless of what anyone may say. take the common sense of it, eat a big breakfast, go to bed early, take time out to get your act/thoughts together. i dont see what your trying to do with the restet. use it to gain? as in your not currently eating 3 meals a day? im not sure what your looking for

I want to get my metabolism back to normal and get my period back, and I thought maybe the leptin reset would help with that. I do try to eat a big breakfast, and I eat 3 meals a day, sometimes with a snack. So I guess I am following some of the guidelines already. I understand what you mean about not wanting to follow a protocol though because I can see how it could hinder recovery. – blur Jan 22 2012 at 2:15
so youre implying eating breakfast might help...??? prolly yes, still not sure wat you mean. just eat food, see your doctor and make sure your hormones are coming up – Mallory Jan 22 2012 at 17:24
actually the biggest mistake i prolly made in my recovery was never ever seeing a doctor or getting blood tests until a week ago, 6 yrs into weight restoration, so i am urging you work with a doctor, even if you need to find one who is on board with the whole 'eat real food' thing – Mallory Jan 22 2012 at 17:25
I'm really just wondering if following the protocol to the book would make a difference/ help. I have a doctor, but she and I are not always on the same page so I may want to find another one. – blur Jan 22 2012 at 19:57

I hope Quilt chimes in on this but I don't see how it could hurt, and would very likely help.

  • Eating 3 meals a day

  • Avoiding snacks

  • Not eating after dinner

  • Eating a clean paleo diet

  • Not stressing your body with too much exercise

  • Eating moderate-low carb

I would think that with an eating disorder you just need to eat foods without any rules other than 3 meals per day. – Sue Jan 22 2012 at 3:16

Forget the leptin thing. Eating food is the most important thing. Just focus on eating, first of all. Forget rules for now. Eat meat and veggies. Come back to regimens when you're healthy. It's going to take awhile. Since your period isn't back, eat carbs too, roasted carrot and turnip feast is a good start.
