I have an upset tummy, just a 24hr bug thing that's going around at the moment.

I have no nausea but everything I eat goes right through me..

I tentatively tried a banana. BAD idea. Then some veg soup. WORSE idea. I've been sipping on coconut water but I am starving.

Normally in this situation I would have some dry toast, since that's out any suggestions for what dry food I could eat that would provide sufficent calories but settle my tummy?

Bone broth i.e. chicken soup. Use any leftover bones you have (beef bones will add a lot of good fat), and boil them for a long time with some sea salt. Add some ginger to calm your stomach even more. You can add some veggies too, but if you're having issues with solid food, don't eat the veggies. The idea is just to extract the minerals and nutrients. Keep drinking this stuff until you feel better.

I whole heartedly agree that some kind of stock, or bone broth, is the way to go. Storebought if you dont have any at home. Ideally you want some that has honest, rendered gelatin in it. Although not discussed much in Paleo circles, gelatin containing soups and foods are pretty good for your digestion. I take some daily (something i learned back from my Weston Price days). – ben61820 Aug 26 2010 at 14:01
Thanks! Just had a big bowl of beef broth that I had frozen, put in a bit of shredded chicken and chopped spring onion. It seems to have done the trick I feel a million times better, normal even! – sarah-ann Aug 26 2010 at 14:30

This seems counter-intuitive.. but since going paleo I've found that canned fish (tuna, salmon or sardines) is actually comforting to the stomach when it's feeling a bit off. I find myself reaching for a can in the same situations I would have looked for crackers or toast before.

Clearly doesn't meet your 'enough calories' criterion, but I'd say fast. Animals do it, and it works for us too. If ever I get a stomach bug, I fast. Clears up much faster.

I'd tend to agree if a person is sick and does not feel hungry. However, if a person feels very hungry, that may be a different thing. In such a case, the body is asking for food. On the flip side, if a person can't find a food that does not make for illness, then by default, you are probably right. – Eva Aug 26 2010 at 14:11
I do fast but I was really hungry, and I'm a wimp for hunger.. – sarah-ann Aug 26 2010 at 14:32

I agree: fast. Hunger fades after a bit, and your system can heal. – Cacktus Wayfinder Aug 26 2010 at 14:41
Looks like the bone broth worked though. Interesting. IMO, every time something works or does not work, that is a clue about what is causing the problem. – Eva Aug 27 2010 at 3:15
When I get migraines I throw up every 10 min or so. It sucks cause I'll be starving and thirsty, but if I eat or drink anything it comes right back up. Only solution is to not eat or drink anything and try to sleep it off. So counter-intuitive! Maybe I should try bone broth next time... – WayfinderAli Oct 13 2011 at 19:50
