Is the paleo diet safe for someone with type 1 diabetes? I've been a type 1 diabetic for over 6 years and I am in my 20's. Thought this would something good to try.

Regarding blood glucose levels in non-diabetics, even a person on deaths door step from starvation has a 'normal' blood glucose level.

A type I diabetic who transitions from SAD to moderate carb paleo, to VLC Paleo needs to be EXTREMELY cautious with what they are doing. Many diabetics are used to shooting X amount of insulin after meals (or right before), of which, the amount of insulin will change DRAMATICALLY on VLC Paloe VS Sad and if one were to make an error in the amount of insulin you can clear your blood stream of Glucose and cause a potential life threatening situation.

On top of all that, type i's can get ketoacidosis or runaway ketosis(from total lack of insulin), if your eating VLC and your blood sugar isnt telling you to shoot insulin, and you have none circulating it can put you into ketoacidoses.

If you are going to VLC and go into ketosis on purpose as a Type I, you had better know EXACTLY what the hell you are doing prior to doing it, because your body STILL NEEDS insulin even in the presence of 0 grams of dietary carbohydrate.

Whatever you do, know your expected outcome before doing it, and have an emergency plan IN PLACE prior to doing whatever it is you attempt in case your blood glucose crashes or you go into KA. You should have someone around you that knows what to do in case you black out or start talking crazy, DO NOT do anything drastic (like 0 carbing it) without someone present.

Many have better control going lower carb. Read Dr. Bernstein's book to get the REAL skinny on low carb diets for T1DM. I think any diet that eliminates processed carbs and has plenty of fat will be an improvement over SAD.

One thing to watch out for:

Along with a lower carb intake, the needed insulin shot dose drops similarly. Therefore you should adjust with your doctor the right (lower) amount of insulin per shot when going paleo.

That's very important.

I've been a Type 1 for 26 years now. Since going paleo and starting Crossfit 2 years ago I have had the greatest health and blood sugar control that I've ever had. My advice would be to take it slow in transitioning from your current diet and adjust your insulin accordingly. Keep a packets of organic raisins and glucose tabs nearby in case you need them. Also test your sugar frequently.

If one goes on a zero carb diet, then is diabetes even a problem? Personally I do buy into the hypothesis that some amount is needed but for diabetics and those with neurological condintions ketonic diets cna be therapeutic.

Even low or no carb food rise blood glucose levels. it's called "chinese restaurant effect" ..although not very appropriate description imo – Thomy Jan 24 2012 at 16:53
Even protein causes an insulin release in normal healthy people, so I think Insulin will always be a requirement for a Type 1, no matter what they eat, unless they eat 100% fat, and even then, there is some carb to be had from fat and from the breakdown of their own protein stores... – Cody Jan 24 2012 at 17:03
Since type 1 is autoimmune related, it might even be possible that the pancreas recovers a little after potentially offending foods have been removed from the diet - and a vlc approach would get along with those small insulin requirements. – Thomy Jan 24 2012 at 17:16
