Hmm well I am not going to be voted the top fan of GM foods any time in the near future. However, I guess the main question for me is how does this change effect the health and nutrient profile of the fish? Growing fast does not automatically make a fish unhealthy to eat. PLus they weren't splicing in pest resisting lectins or anything (as far as I know). Probably, there will be various hormonal changes in the fish, something that will effect growth rate but it's hard to say how signficant these changes will be to overal digestion of the fish. So it might not be the most dangerous food out there, especially when compared to breakfast cereal, twinkies, etc, In fact, compared to 90 percent of what else is already in the grocery store now as we speak, Mr Frankenfish might just be downright healthy! ;-)

Only buy wild, those will be farmed(hope,hope) and not released to wild/breed

Restaurants will be trickier, but I only really eat sashimi out now, and my itamae only buys wild caught

I guess if you have a really low bar on food quality, you might think there are worse things to eat. If you care about food and your body, you generally have a higher standard and and probably think is there something better to eat than GMO. If you look at hormone laden chicken and beef these days, you might say the nutritional profile is not dramatically changed (unless you care about having man boobs). So how about getting man boobs from your fish supply? That sounds greeeaaaat!

I do not believe these will escape into the wild and reproduce any more than someone will break into Fort Knox. Remember, that they make money selling the eggs, so if these start to reproduce by themselves, all the million dollars into creating this work of fart will be down the drain.

Probably way healthier than eating the fish feed, and the GMO fish is eating the wild fish or even the farmed non-GMO fish. Besides, the next step will be a non-GMO label like the organic label that will sold at a premium. So we will have the chicken fingers version of the most perfect food and the "Angus" version of the most perfect food. Perhaps we can GMO salmon into the nutritional value of a burger?

I watched most of the FDA public hearing yesterday and it sounds like this thing will likely get approved and as of right now it is just a matter of how it will be labeled (i.e. "Genetically Engineered Salmon", "AquAdvantage Salmon", "Transgenic Salmon", "Panamanian Inland Salmon", etc.) I think we are all in the same boat that we would like to see stricter labeling that allows us to differentiate which fish is GE and which is not, but ultimately most of us are eating wild salmon anyways, so it would have little if any impact on us paleo folks.

The tests presented at the hearing showed no statistically significant differences between standard farmed fish and farmed AquAdvantage salmon in protein content, total n-3's, n-3/n-6 ratio, and basically every other standard test that is out there for food. The only difference I recall is growth time (AquAdvantage grows roughly twice as fast). This makes me wonder though, with growth time being cut in half, would this mean a push for greater salmon consumption in the Standard American Diet and a greater chance that consumers would buy into it because of the (what I would assume to be) cheaper price? I am definitely not saying I am in favor of having GE salmon on the market, just playing devil's advocate.
