On the fringe between VLC and LC are there any gotchas? In particular living just outside ketosis? Would you want to pad that with a few extra grams of carbs?

EDIT:

If through experiment you decide that ketosis happens for you below 48g of carbs. Would it be wise to eat at 55g of carbs or would it better to stay clear of that amount and take 70-80 grams of carbs? Not really a debate between VLC and LC but more a question about the human body. Can it handle living just outside of ketosis with the least amount of carbs to stay out of ketosis?

What's wrong with ketosis? By the way, ketones are always present in blood. Reference range is 0.5-3.0 mg/dl. Ketosis just means elevated serum ketone bodies. Mild is 5, moderate is 7, "severe" would be greater than 50mg/dl. Unless you are headed for ketoacidosis, what problem would values in the 5-7 range present? – Dave S. Jan 25 2012 at 14:21
Nothing wrong with ketosis. I was just wondering if you lived just outside of ketosis if you could suffer from glucose deprevation. – Eric Jan 25 2012 at 15:34
OMG, Eric, dear, please keep reading. – The Loon Jan 26 2012 at 0:48
You're not a digital computer. 55g, 48g, 70-80? It's all just an estimate. Many processes occur simultaneously. Between 50-100g/day CHO a day is a good place for many people. – Don Jan 26 2012 at 1:16
Loon - Not deprevation but less than you would have if you were in ketosis. I seem to prefer Ketosis and get headaches out of it... – Eric Jan 26 2012 at 6:36

Why not carb cycle. I run fine on low carbs as long as I am not doing anything to demanding. I find I recover better when I reintroduce moderate carbs post workouts. Rest of the time I just have trace carbs or green veggies while upping my fat. There is also something called the Anabolic Diet which does 5-6 days of a VLC diet in ketosis followed by a 1-2 days ( usually the weekends) with higher carbs.

if you lift weights, when you go vlc and find that you look/feel flat, scrawny, and cant get a pump and/or your test drops so low you stop waking up w erections, thats VLC sayin 'GOTCHA'

This was funny, but totally not what I've experienced on VLC, even zero carbs. In fact, pretty much the opposite. – Joshua Jan 25 2012 at 15:40

^^^ Thats nice, I can ride a bicycle from Florida to Washington State and my body will be burning fat all the way, but if your lifting weight and expect to actually increase your poundages, your gonna need some carbs. If you were trapped underneath a burning car who would you rather come along? A guy with muscles full of glycogen from lifting heavy ass stuff, or a marathon runner who eats low carb??? – Bill1102inf Jan 26 2012 at 3:52

There is no 'Gotcha' that you're going to read about in the abstract. You've just got to trial things on your own in the real world w/ your own body.

Personally, I would go as high as I could if I was still getting good results. For me that is more to the VLC end but YMMV. I think it is good for everyone to be in ketosis here and there, but whether you stay there for long depends on your metabolism.
