Fascinating results from a new study of the Masai and Hazda: http://blog.vitamindcouncil.org/2012/01/25/new-study-vitamin-d-levels-of-the-maasai-and-hadzabe-of-africa/

[The Masai's] mean 25(OH) vitamin D level was 48 ng/ml (119 nmol/L) and ranged from 23 to 67 ng/ml.

[The Hazda's] mean 25(OH)D was 44 ng/ml and ranged from 28 to 68 ng/ml.

Wow, that's incredible. Most people here are totally overshooting. – Travis Culp Jan 25 2012 at 21:42
It should also be stated that the claim that the Hadza have no personal possessions isn't strictly true as the men always have at least their bows, arrows and knives. – Travis Culp Jan 25 2012 at 21:46
I'm under the impression that the people overshooting aren't in the majority as much as simply talking about it a lot. – Dean Jan 26 2012 at 3:23
10KIU shoots serum levels up like a rocket as soon as fat stores are saturated. – Travis Culp Jan 26 2012 at 19:27

Those seem to be in the average range.

Cool!

It makes sense to me that they would have levels at this range, given that they are avoiding the sun during the hottest parts of the day.

Even so, I am happy to keep my level around 80 ng/ml, because I feel good and have no asthma symptoms at this level.

I have other environmental stressors that these tribal folks may not have (air pollution, traffic noise, etc...)

I will probably change my recommendation for my clients to 50-60 ng/ml (rather than 50-80), unless they have an auto-immune condition that could benefit from a higher level.

here is somthing you will never hear from anybody else. vitamin D is not a vitamin at all. Vitamin D is a hormone. if you take a vitamin D supplement you are just screwing up your hormones. Humans need sunshine for health. just because just one hormone synthesis pathway in man is photosynthetic , it doesn't mean hundreds of other photosynthetic hormones and cofactors will not be discovered latter on. if you dont get sunlight you are cheating yourself out of the best health possible. i used to take vitamin D3 and then i stopped to think about its structure and how similar its structure was to other steroid hormones. just remember the science we know today will seem just as funny and ridiculous as medical science of 100 years ago.
