I just introduced sweet potatoes back into my diet. I don't load them with anything but a bunch of cinnamon :] I always eat my potato last...even if theres a huge piece of meat on my plate. I can always eat a sweet potato, they taste delicious, fill me up, and I always feel great after eating them. They bring me pure joy...seriously.

If I could only have 4 things in life it would be bacon, sweet potatoes, wine, and dark chocolate.

What foods make you more than satisfied but literally change your mood!?

+1 for the happy-happy-joy-joy tag. Part of living paleo/primal for me is the pure, unadulterated and visceral joy at life and all of the wonderful things in it. Like a slow-cooked lamb over an open fire. – Caleb the Hobbit Jan 27 2012 at 3:36

Anyone who says the paleo diet is too restricting is plain wrong. I've been exposed to more wonderful foods now since I don't eat grains.

My new favorite food is aged Gouda cheese. It is pure bliss to bite into.

mmmm. Me too. Going paleo has given me more appreciation for my father's absolute love of cheeses, well aged of course. – Caleb the Hobbit Jan 27 2012 at 4:05

Bone marrow and the strip of fat found on a sirloin steak (which has been caramelised on the BBQ) - words cannot describe the visceral, deep seated animalistic orgasmic pleasure they induce in me...

slow-roasted pork belly, where the fat just melts in your mouth, with a side of sweet potato to mash into some of the rendered fat. OMG. top me off with a glass of wine, and i'm one happy camper!

  1. Lox. Seriously. Love it.
  2. Lamb. Cooked any way. Words cannot express.
  3. Guava. Don't eat it often, but guava paste with cream cheese is divine.
  4. Picanha. See the response above
  5. Pastrami.
  6. cashews.

This list could be much longer.

Bacon sandwiches where bacon is the "bread" and guacamole in the middle. A large cut of steak cooked rare that melts in your mouth.

I don't like guacamole, but otherwise I'm with you! – Nance Jan 27 2012 at 17:16

Ribs made with a mesquite dry rub.

Pastured eggs lightly fried in ghee so the yolk is still liquid, with few grains of sea salt on the yolks, maybe a touch of turmeric on the yolks as well, and a 3-4 strips of bacon.

Steak with a little bit of ghee melted on top, maybe some A1 and bacon, and/or some shrimp.

Roast lamb.

Roasted Yam/Sweet potato mashed with cinnamon, a tablespoon of coconut oil, and vanilla extract.

A square of 99% dark chocolate, or even 90%.

Macadamia nuts, when I can find them.

Coffee with coconut milk and vanilla extract.

A good single malt, i.e. Highland Park, Oban, Auchentoshan, etc.

Teaspoon of Nutella.

I used to love cheeses, but they cause me GERD, otherwise, I'd list things like blue cheese, very old aged gouda (when it has salt crystals in it.)

You mean besides fruit? Okay, the answer is fruit.

Seriously, in modest amounts fruit brings joy; in excess, it makes me less serene and we might say irritable.

Beef brings joy and serenity and there are no portion limits. I can eat nothing but beef until I'm full and I will feel calm, steady and serene. No bloat or GI discomfort either.

Other foods, even those I love, don't seem to affect my mood as long as I stay away from wheat.

The most memorable meal I've ever had was a mango picked off the tree during peak ripeness in Honduras. I had to eat it in solitude, as the juices dripped down my chin and hands. It was very barbaric, but I couldn't stop devouring with the fervor of a rabid animal! – Rio Apr 9 at 0:29

This list would be much longer if I included compound foods, it's combinations of certain foods that really make me happy. But, seeing as everyone else seems to be listing whole foods...

  • Picanha, a specific cut of beef sirloin cap served in Churrasciras with the fat cap intact. The meat has sirloin flavor, but the fat comes out crispy, like a beefy bacon.

  • Manchego cheese, a Spanish sheep's milk cheese that is hard, nutty like Asiago but slightly sweet. It goes very well with cold leftover roasted beef.

  • Chèvre, as long as it's got a pronounced lactic tang, I absolutely love this with apples.

  • Peking Duck, or any duck with crispy skin.

Honorable mention to cherries and plums. When they are properly ripened and just sweet enough, there isn't very much in the botanical kingdom that can make me happier.

I am SO coming for dinner. I want this "Picanha" you speak of! – Hoover Jan 27 2012 at 1:54
+1 for picanha. I used to live in Brazil. best stuff I ate there. – Caleb the Hobbit Jan 27 2012 at 1:59
Me too on the cherries and plums. I'm lucky to find perfect ones even once per year but when I do, wow ... – Nance Jan 27 2012 at 2:26

I recently discovered goat milk kefir (Redwood Hill Farm brand) and OMG it tastes like liquid chevre. I was pretty joyful about that. – PrairieProf Jan 27 2012 at 2:59

+1 for the duck, especially a slice that has good amounts of skin, flesh and fat in it – Grottenolm Jan 27 2012 at 3:40

Food wise, nothing makes me happier than beef ribeye with a side of sweet potater fries.

I'm with you on the sweet potato! Give me a generous sprinkling of cinnamon and coconut oil. I also make a killer-addictive roasted butternut squash with cinnamon and red pepper flakes, so good. Dead easy too, recipe is on my blog. Some of my happy foods also include beef liver, steak, avocado...yum...

Mostly fatty pastured animal foods:all homemade

1) Ethnic meat recipes (Paleofied)- stews, soups, curries, chili, taco meat, fajitas, lamb shank in red wine, Jamaican jerk, Tex-Mex, goulash, meat sauce, Meatza, kaftas, etc.

2) Most pastured dairy (esp. raw) egg nog, ice cream, whipping cream, sour cream, butter, rice pudding, flan, mousse

I do enjoy 70-85% dark chocolate, Japanese yams, and coconut oil baked plantain chips from time to time.

Pre-Paleo days I was addicted to nasty processed concoctions of gluten, soy, sweeteners, and vegetable oils which now nauseate me.

The hubby and I don't subscribe to palatability hypothesis as we ate and continue to eat hyperpalatable homecooked food and have reached our personal ideal body comp. I was low-carbing 1 year before Paleo but had some improved body-comp on Paleo (now just starting year 2 of Paleo).

I've kept off the weight - now in year 3. Since most people regain weight in 2 years on almost any other diet (and that happened to me - actually I regained in a few months in all prior diets except low-carb), I know that Paleo has worked for my hubby and I!

It's too early for me to make claims, but it sure FEELS different this time. I have real hope I'll keep my weight off also. – Nance Jan 27 2012 at 17:18

A few bites of flourless chocolate cake or dark chocolate mousse. Rich, dark, and's not too sweet. Just enough to feel like I got enough, not enough to feel uncomfortably full or guilty.

seriously...i have a craving now. last time I had cake was wedding cake in july. *drools* – Hoover Jan 27 2012 at 1:43

YES. I make David Lebovitz's chocolate idiot cake and it's like a lovely chocolate hug. Or orgasm - if there is whipped cream. – syrahna Jan 27 2012 at 2:17

I don't eat it often, but to quote John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, "Bacon tastes good." Bacon changes my mood in the manner you suggest. A ribeye and a single malt scotch do this as well. That makes me relax.

mmm bacon and scotch. sounds like my favorite vacation destination. – Chris Jan 27 2012 at 1:40

nothing beats a good, well-made thai pumpkin curry.

also a big fan of mashed sweet potatoes - boil peeled, chopped sweet potatoes till fork tender...mash with coconut milk, cinnamon, & nutmeg.

High fat seems to be a key element in making me sigh with delight. If I've been fasting for a while and/or in keto, a good fatty meal will make my brain feel like its buzzing, and I can't help but sit back and giggle. It's better than most drugs!

More tangible answers: sauteed broccoli topped with home made guac is pretty trustworthy. A nice cut of wild caught salmon, pan-fried in coconut oil until the skin is nice and crispy, is another favorite.

A most excellent question...so juicy!

High fat foods are my common thread:

85% dark chocolate (check ingredients for lame ingredients) grass fed pork ribs: the fattier the better! salty cashews sweet potatoes and coconut oil (dripping liquid coconut oil over baked sweet pots) okra cooked in grass fed beef sausage fat guacamole with grass fed beef creamed kale - kale cooked in full fat coconut milk bacon

Oh my I'm salivating just thinking about it all!!

Pre-paleo, I never realized how decadent food could be...love Paleo and all the options now ;-)

Tropical fruits picked right from the plant on a Caribbean island. Specifically, hand picked mango grown in Jamaica. Pure bliss! It makes any fruit shipped here in the states taste bland and overly sweet. Nothing like it.

Pumpkin, I just love it and you can do so much with it, be it savory or sweet. I eat 2 pumpkins a week......maybe its an addiction:)
