Hello. I am new to this whole Paleo business. Having decided to start it from the start of this year. It is going well, I really didn't think that I would adapt to it as quickly as I have. But there is one problem that I am having.

What should I eat before I go to workout?

Normally, before going to the gym and doing a weights session, I always used to eat a bowl of oats about 45 minutes to an hour before I was going to the gym, making sure I had about 30 minutes to let it settle.

I am ideally looking for something quick and easy to make, but I have tried a banana and found I was flagging during my workout. What do some of you eat before you work out?

Thanks. jono

If its just a workout (ie. not something competitive), i usually just work out fasted.
It may take you a few sessions to get adapted to training fasted, but you get use to it after a while.

if i feel like i need a bit of an energy boost first, i may do a coconut water. or a sugar-free guarana & caffeine energy drink (i know not very paleo) with no 951 (Aspartame, Nutrasweet, Equal) or 961 (Neotame).
I guess a coffee would have the same effect, but i've given up drinking coffee.

I think I am going to try fasted, and hopefully I will get used to it. Thanks. – Jono Jan 29 2012 at 18:08

Two cans of sardines (in water) mixed with kimchi is my go-to. If I'm out of kimchi I might use sauerkraut or guacamole. I typically eat 3 hours prior to my workout.

I'm pretty new to this Paleo diet but I typically workout in the pm, I eat dinner at about 5 and grab a banana and almonds on my way to workout at 7 just to boost me through.

Usually nothing if a.m. Workout. If I did would be fruit or protein shake. But I do like a black coffee before workout.

Also, if early morning workout shouldn't a person still have adequate glycogen stores in muscles for morning weight training if had carbs in dinner night before?

Thanks Sue. I am going to try fasted workouts and hopefully just get used to it. – Jono Jan 29 2012 at 18:09
