has anyone tried this, in the vein of TEECINO and CHOFFY (i love chocolate)

it seems like it would be easy to do? i am craving coffee and i am broke

Teechino is delic. It's made on dates, carob, ground nuts etc, no nothing bad in it.

I work in a herb/tea shop. I sometimes also make up coffee substitute for customers that are giving up coffee but still want the flavour. Roasted chicory root, roasted dandelion root actually tastes pretty close. The better you grind it up the better the flavour. – HippiPaleo Feb 1 2012 at 5:17

Why do you want to substitute coffee? Coffee's amazing. Those things frankly sound more processed than using a ground up bean to infuse flavour into some water.

A mixture of ground, dried up roots is going to be far more 'paleo' than low-quality, shitty coffee that's been sitting in a bag for who-knows-how-long. Hello mycotoxins. If you wanna play the 'but-is-it-paleo?' game. – primalpat Jan 18 at 15:51

Hi everyone (I'm newbie to this community, enjoying everyone's comments very much - on Paleo since Christmas lol) :) Me too, coffee triggers rough hypoglycemic episodes in me (specially after an HIIT strength/ resistance workout (but I did cardio as well the other day when that happened), along with the protein recovery drink eh! I know stupid me). Didn't happen again since I quit on coffee, neither I feel sluggish anymore after the workouts (or after anything for that matter, as long as I don't take ANY simple sugar sources ...)! The thing with the coffee for me? Comfort!, after a good meal :) So I followed someone's idea here that I saw the other day (on another post for sure that I can't find right now) of making hot chocolate (in my case I did like this: just hot water from the coffee machine, pinch of cinnamon and little lactose-free milk for the texture) the thing is that yesterday and in between recovery drink - I add cocoa powder to it for texture - and small cups of chocolate after all meals (I was craving this XD), I end up having 5 portions through the entire day. I guess it's a lot because it still has natural sugars (and even though I'm a woman working out hard and regularly, and near a new period week - the week before my periods I'm always so hungry all the time), and because of the phytic acid :S So I guess I'm replacing some with decaffeinated drink, the less the bad what can one do... :S :)

I'm not sure of the overall distribution of the Beech tree but if it's common in your area you can harvest the nuts usually in June and July. You remove the green spiky casings and then roast the small, triangular nuts on a baking sheet, after that they can be ground into quite a nice coffee substitute. The quality swings pretty wildly, I still don't have a very good handle on what is a good amount of roasting; I've made really nice batches and so-so batches.

Coffee is cross-reactive if you have gluten issues. The Paleo Mom has discussed this, and so has Chris Kresser.

If you're going to drink coffee, I'd get some very high quality stuff, wet-processed.

I love yerba mate, and highly recommend it as a coffee substitute. It doesn't make you jittery and doesn't make you crash either. I have adrenal issues, but don't find it aggravates it.

This isn't exactly coffee, but I mix a large cup of hot water with 100% cocoa powder and add a little honey as a sweetener. I switched from coffee to this since coffee irritated my blood sugar and would leave me feeling shaky and sick.
