I noticed something this morning. The breakfast I was eating, I wouldn't have eaten pre-paleo. I had a big hunk of grass-fed beef with some pesto, sauerkraut, and kale. Kraut and kale are both fairly new to my diet, especially breakfast. But then I also added a touch of black currant preserves, low in sugar. It added just a touch of sweetness, and really rounded out some of the flavors. My father puts jam on meat, and I used to find it disgusting. So apparently my tastes have changed.
Is this typical? Has anyone else noticed a change in their tastebuds? Bonus if someone knows the science behind it.
I always claimed to have sensitive taste buds and now I've found out just how sensitive they really are. I can taste and enjoy different strains of leaf lettuce, and the differences between pink and red grapefruit, etc. It seems the more "whole" I leave my foods the more I can distinguish between flavors. It makes this lifestyle even more enjoyable for me.
I don't know the science, but I agree that my taste has changed since going Paleo. My husband is crazy about beets, and I tried them after we were first married (about 7 years ago) and thought they were horrible and tasted like dirt. I tried them a few weeks ago and thought they were FANTASTIC! I didn't used to like spinach either and could only gag it down with about a 1/2 gallon of ranch dressing on it. Now I can eat it plain, right out of the bag with no additives. It's amazing :)
I was never a savory fan. When I was overweight and living on the SAD, it was ALL about what kind of sweet crap I could throw on top of whatever I was eating (sweet potato fries? i'm-a dip those in syrup, please!). Now, it's pretty much the complete opposite. I like my occasional sweet treat, but that's just it... it's just a treat (and very low in sugar). I used to despise the taste of coconut, as well. Now, it's coconut oil, butter, flour... I mean, I'll bathe in it, why not?
I absolutely crave savory meats, eggs, etc... even with just a simple S&P seasoning. I herald this as an amazing lifestyle change.
