Now that you are eating "paleo", do you eat food that you have dropped on the floor without dusting or rinsing it off to get the benefits of the probiotics from the food touching the floor?

It seems kind of silly to worry about a little bit of bacteria when your body is made up of over 90 trillion microbes.

Ha, ha. Always have. Five second rule. Mind you, I don't imagine there are any beneficial probiotics on my floor. And I draw the line at dog hair.

Five second rule? Where's the challenge in that? Three seconds I thought! – Sam Jan 30 2012 at 18:12
Ha! Old folks use 10 second rule! – henny Feb 2 2012 at 1:15

Umm . . . I always have, including my SAD/SHAD days. I'm old enough that I didn't grow up in today's germ-phobic environment. Depending on circumstances I may pick off hair or pop it in my mouth or I may give the item a quick rinse but I don't throw solid things away just because I drop them.

But then, I ate many lunches/snacks in barns and did the same thing there. If anything, I'm unusually healthy and don't get sick all that often so I'm not planning to change.

That said, when handling raw meat and even while cooking it my hands and implements get washed and re-washed until the exteriors of all chunks are well heat-sealed. I'm only casual about things I eat raw.

Ha! This question makes me think of barns too. Specifically the fairground cattle barn of my childhood, where for one week a year I ate copious amounts of junk food while leaning against a cow. Good times! I wouldn't change a thing. – syrahna Jan 31 2012 at 2:34
@syrahna, me either! – Nance Jan 31 2012 at 2:54

Meh...I eat my meat raw, so I don't worry too much about washing my hands after handling it. A good rinse is enough for me. – Futureboy Jan 31 2012 at 3:52

I used to do this all the time. But now, when I think about the copious amounts of bread my family eats, and all the bread crumbs that must be flying around like evil demons, I don't eat anything that has touched the floor. Who knows how many gluten are on there?

LOL, I live with dogs and cats so I don't worry much. I figure I'm always kissing them anyhow, so what difference does it make? – Nance Jan 30 2012 at 17:59

I just today read an article/blog in Scientific American about this very subject, titled "Eating Off the Floor: How Clean Living is Bad for You."

Fascinating stuff!

My dog usually gets it before my bad back and I can get down to pick it up.

Yes, I guess pet owners don't have to worry about picking up food dropped on the floor since they own live vacuum cleaners. – Wcc Kamal Stabby fan Jan 30 2012 at 19:11

No 5 second rule for me. If I beat the dog, I call it good. – Tom R. Jan 30 2012 at 19:13
I did just have my back surgically repaired this past Wednesday, so I might be racing the dog for those dropped scraps in the near future! Perhaps that isn't such a good idea, though...... Still bad for my back and it will probably piss the dog off! – Nate Jan 30 2012 at 19:36
I haven't yet sunk to fighting the pets for scraps. – thhq Jan 30 2012 at 20:59

Depends on the food, depends on the floor. Visible dirt is not happening.

I dropped the cap of an Aquafina in the toilet while I was taking a leak. I thought to myself, "Ah hell, I'm paleo now", and I rinsed it off and continued using it.

Yeah, I eat food off the floor, too.

For me all lines lead to eat it....Hell I've eaten stuff off of other peoples floor that I didnt even drop ;P≥...seriously our society with their purrel and antiseptics and whatnot make me laugh. Me and my kids do none of it and are absolutely less sick for it!

+1 We've become way too germophobic. Not all bacteria is bad and we seem to want to kill them all. – Wcc Kamal Stabby fan Jan 31 2012 at 1:41

Triclosan is the devil. It's like we want to make sure to grow super bacteria. – syrahna Jan 31 2012 at 2:35

I eat off the ground while camping, and while at home... I do maintain a certain level of clean in any kitchen area... So this is not nearly as filthy as some might think!

I rinsed things off way before I was paleo. 10 second rule and if there's dirt, I baptise the tidbit via faucet!

I sweep my wood floors every morning because I have two cats. And I usually sweep up another cat. :) So yeah I've been known to eat something I've dropped especially if it's bacon.

Yes, i havent drop dead yet. My floor propably has more beneficial bacteria than grocerie store vegs so i figure why not ;)

The title of this cracked me up pretty hard, because my five year old son has recently discovered "Plants vs Zombies" and his favorite thing to do is quote Crazy Dave saying "I eat food off the floor!".

With that said, of course we do. I have young kids, and if the dogs don't get to it first and the floors have been cleaned in the past week, it's fair game.

Only if it's been dropped in the last hour and not covered with hair.

I'm more concerned about the superbugs in CAFO meat than I am the "germs" on my floor.

Always. Especially bacon... But I RARELY drop bacon.

If there is hair, I spit the hair out... Always worked for me, even pre-paleo. – Energymonkey Feb 1 2012 at 1:49

Managed to rescue some of my breakfast off the kitchen floor before the dog pounced on it this morning!!;o)

Rarely dust things off - i figure it won't kill me! So far it's worked - i am not dead. :)

I would never eat food off the floor e.g. piece of apple, not even if I rinsed it, in case the bacteria is still in the fruit.

I intentionally drop all my food on the floor before eating it, dropping it on the floor and letting it sit there for a good thirty seconds ensures that the food is not too clean. Eating food that is too clean can compromise your immune system and digestive system over time. Food is to antiseptic these days which is why people get sick all the time. I haven't eaten an apple without first rubbing it on the floor in over four years, and during that time I have not had any digestive issues. Give rubbing your apple on the floor a try, you'll be surprised how much it improves your health. – Poop Master MC Dec 2 at 20:45
