Soon it's gonna be my 1 year paleo anniversary. Since nobody else around me does paleo, I'll have to celebrate on my own. And what's better than a video game to have some lonely fun? Sure, video games aren't technically paleo. But it takes away a lot of stress, doesn't it?

What are some good video games that fit into the paleo lifestyle? Feel free to create one yourself...

This is what I've come up with : you're a caveman in an unlimited, open world. The only other creatures are animals (or humans). Your goal is simple : survive. By hunting. By finding berries or other edible plants. Night and day are real-time (like F.lux), so you can't play the game at night unless you find a way to make a fire. Multiplayer would be absolutely awesome.

Spore? It's evolutionarily-focused. At least, the cellular and bestial stages are. – Adulescens Appetens Jan 31 2012 at 6:34

This is probably going to be construed as a bit harsh, but: isn't this COMPLETELY against the point of paleo?! Go LIVE an adventure, and do yourself a favor: throw away the television on your way out. – raney Jan 31 2012 at 19:16
UnReal World is basically exactly what you describe :) See my answer below: paleohacks.com/questions/93931/paleo-video-game/… – curiousepic Feb 1 2012 at 3:49

I would say Link from The Legend of Zelda is pretty Paleo. He eats monster hearts to recover his health and tends to push and lift heavy things.

If you're talking caveman games, you can't forget about "Bonk"...

Super Meat Boy is also pretty paleo (although you might say he's more "primal")...

I dunno, I'm kinda partial to Minecraft as you basically get to completely modify the world around you, you require sustenance and shelter, you get to explore, etc... during the day you hunt, at night you hunker down to prevent getting killed... there is no good or evil, there is just "exist", and the goals of the game vary from player to player... a true "Sandbox" game.

That being said, I always end up Neolithic as I make minecarts and tracks, and usually grow a wheat and sugar cane garden.

I'll second Minecraft... it's especially fun when you have a server set up. – jessecurry Jan 31 2012 at 4:34
I find the cows disappear when you go too far from them, otherwise you'd be able to make herds and farm cows and such... – DePaw Jan 31 2012 at 11:26
@DePaw - If you feed two cows in close proximity to one another, they will make offspring. So the secret is to build a fence around 3-4 cows, and then feed them. Soon enough you'll have a herd. – Joshua Jan 31 2012 at 14:29

SPORE!!!! You begin as a small organism in the water and slowly evolve and grow legs to walk on land. Eventually, the game goes to space!!! You can customize your appearance and it's so fun!!!

Guys, you can stop right there. UnReal World is THE Paleo video game. It's basically the OP's dream game - an open-ended survival simulation in the style of a Roguelike (but with actual graphics), set in iron age Finland. It's the labor of love by one Finnish guy for the past 20 years, and I've come back to it every few years or so to some very awesome additions to gameplay and the detail of the world. Here is a video playthrough if you're interested, but don't watch too much of it if you'd rather discover some interesting bits yourself.

You can try the game for free for 10 in-game days, but the full version is only $3. While a lifetime registration for all future updates is $55, it's well worth it in my opinion, since development is steady, and few modern mainstream games are as deep, addictive, and all around fun. Yes, the interface is confusing, but the gameplay is so engrossing that it soon becomes transparent.

And, best of all, it has a quite detailed simulation of your diet, and of course it's paleo as a result of your environment and abilities as a human in the iron age! Technically, you can practice agriculture, but grains aren't as nutritious as salmon!

God of War series. Kratos is no chef, but makes enough chopped liver and minced meat to feed a village.

So doing the drum circle at Macworld last weekend (it's a cool, paleo-ish experience) reminded me of a game I played a while back called Patapon. It's basically a rhythm game except it's more free-form in that you are directing a tribe of creatures as their god via drum beats. So patapatapatapon = move forward, ponponpatapon = attack, an so on. After every input, they also respond with their variation of the beat and as you do better, the music becomes more complex.

Over the course of the stages, you gather meat and other ingredients from the animals/enemies you defeated to spawn more tribe members or get better equipment.

Here's a video of the first game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAdbCIdNg4A

World of Warcraft. I refuse to use any healing item that has gluten in it. Screw you Spice Bread, I don't need your healing buff of 61HP over 18 seconds!
