I just watched a video on DDT and Toxins in animal fat. It was pretty scary. Does this mean we should stop eating fish and eggs, since just 1/2 and egg puts you over on your exposure to DDT. I eat a lot of eggs and fish. That is a big part of my diet. Are organic eggs still exposed to high levels of DDT. I need more information and I am wondering if anyone has more details on this matter.

Here is a link to the video:

Here is the exact email I received from the Organic Consumers Association: Dioxin, a chemical component of the herbicide Agent Orange, is perhaps the most toxic compound synthesized by man. Yet it is still being produced by chemical companies and pesticide manufacturers such as Monsanto, AND dioxin pollution increased 10% in 2010. Now, as the Environmental Protection Agency is set to release the first part of the dioxin risk assessment it's been working on since 1985, food industry lobbyists are attempting to block EPA action yet again. Why? The EPA is likely to confirm what the FDA has report – monaLisa Jan 30 2012 at 23:48
Cont.. "Although dioxins are environmental contaminants, most dioxin exposure occurs through the diet, with over 95% coming through dietary intake of animal fats." The food industry doesn't want you to know that you can easily exceed the daily dioxin limit proposed by the EPA by consuming a single large meal of non-organic animal products. Most of all, the food industry doesn't want to have to take responsibility for the dioxin contamination. If they did, they would have to submit to common-sense food safety measures, like those embraced by the organic industry, that ban toxic pesticides. – monaLisa Jan 30 2012 at 23:49

There should not be any DDT in chicken eggs in the USA since DDT has been a banned substance for quite a long time.

Yeah, I was wondering just how old the video was! Malaria has been making a comeback in some parts of the world because DDT has been banned so completely, so it seems unlikely that it would be showing up in eggs today. – Aaron B. Jan 30 2012 at 22:01
The video was sent to me in regard to a recent study the EPA is supposed to publish, but companies like Monsanto are trying to block the publication. The petition was to allow the study to be published. The e-mail also stated that DDT use has risen 10% in the last year and continues to rise despite its known risks. I can only assume it is not being used in the US, but these days it is not safe to assume anything. – monaLisa Jan 30 2012 at 23:43

If you are going to worry about DDT then you should probably be worry about anti-biotics too: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/12/news-update-farm-animals-get-80-of-antibiotics-sold-in-us/

I would be even more afraid of Dr's who prescribe antibiotics for the common cold, sore throat, sniffles, sneezing, the flu, stuffiness, fever and coughing without the slightest idea of whether a bacteria is present or even when they know its a viral problem. – Bill1102inf Jan 30 2012 at 20:00
antibiotics are in commercial meat and farm raised fish. Organic Meat, and eggs does not contain antibiotics. I only eat organic and my question was about organic eggs. – monaLisa Jan 30 2012 at 23:38

We definitely shouldn't be worried about anything. We should perhaps have a variety of sources of food though.
