Wow. I just came across this pic from Visual Economics and I couldn't think of a better way to contrast my diet with the SAD.
The AA (average American) eats 60 lbs. of beef in a year - about what I eat in two months. Same with fish - I eat about 100 lbs of fish a year, compared to 15 for the AA! On the other end, there are about 450 lbs. on that chart that I don't consume at all - milk, grains, and sugar. At least they're (we're?) eating a lot of fruit and veggies - that should balance out the 53 gallons of soda, right?
It's one thing to know in the back of your head that most people eat terribly, but seeing the numbers like this is kind of shocking. Anyone have any lbs. per month/year figures to compare?
I'm guesstimating from my non-Paleo days (which I was vegetarian before--occasionally chicken and ate fish/seafood a lot) that I was probably eating more than average wheat products, I used to drink milk with every meal, often ate fast food (Panda Express and Burger King were my favorite), very few vegetables, a decent amount of fruit, and probably lots of bad oils. Never drank caffeine or soda, and had desserts often (candy, ice cream, cheesecake).
Now, I eat over a pound of meat/fish a day (so easily around 700 lbs of meat/fish a year--yikes), way more veggies (maybe 2-300 lbs a year. I DOUBT the average American eats 400+ lbs!). I've taken out fruit, removed all wheat/grains/sugar from my diet, obviously no more fast food, no more dairy, rarely eat chicken, and have switched to good fats/oils such as ghee and coconut oil. And before, I rarely ate eggs, and now I eat 2-3 a day.
Average calories everyday about 1600-2200.
I've been following paleo for five months, but my annualized consumption would look as follows: vegetables 808 lbs, fruit 167 lbs, dairy 106 lbs, eggs 99 lbs, seafood 78 lbs, red meat 58 lbs, nuts and cocoa 29 lbs, fats 23 lbs, poultry 22 lbs, grain products 4 lbs, products containing sugar 3 lbs. I've cut way down on dairy and nuts over the last couple of months though.
I go through a half pound of coffee a week, 60lbs of ground beef quarterly, another 30lbs of steaks and roasts quarterly, and a pound of bacon in a week. 1.5 dozen eggs for myself in a week, and probably 20lbs of pastured pork every quarter. Since all of my meat excluding bacon is from the co-op, I can remember it well.
Veggies, not so much. I buy them as I need them.
I dont eat very much chicken or fish. I don't really like chicken at all, and even in Florida fish is prohibitively expensive, up to 20/pound for any sustainable, wild caught fish. Fatty fish is really hard to come by near the warm waters of Florida except for mullet, which I do like smoked but is a bit strong when prepared any other way. I'd venture that I eat 8lbs combined of fruits and veggies per week, and maybe 5 pounds each of fish and chicken quarterly.
Fats and oils? I go through two 54oz tubs of coconut oil in a quarter, and I buy a block of kerrygold weekly, but I also cook my non-paleo family meals with the coconut oil so I could make due with less.
I've been restricting calories for weight loss, but once I'm done in a month or two I'll prob eat around:
Beef: Around 700 lbs a year. Don't like chicken or pork, and lamb is too expensive here.
Butter: ~25 lbs a year. I put it on steak and use it to make sauces.
Vegetables: Occasionally i'll cut up a pepper or onion to add some flavor, but even then only 1 or 2 once or twice a month. Not sure how much that would come out to. 5 lbs?
Tubers: I eat 600 or so calories of potatoes a day to fuel my heavy weight lifting. Not sure how much that is. 100 lbs maybe?
Milk: I'm not against Milk, but it makes me eat too much when I drink it, so I don't.
