I had blood work on Paleo Day 20. My BUN/creatinine ratio was 29! BUN 27, up from 16 in July. Creatinine .92, up from .84 in July. Should I be worried? Eat less meat? Ditch the AM whey protein shakes? (No breakfast eggs b/c of migraine--will add back Feb 21--no migraine for 2.5 weeks!!)

I'm female, 40, 5'5", 165 lb. Lost 11 lb. the first 2 weeks of paleo. No health problems other than migraine, restless legs syndrome, seborrheic dermatitis. Thanks in advance.

While your BUN:Cr is higher than "normal," it is not a cause of concern. It's an expected finding for someone working out and eating a high protein diet, especially on a workout day. Your Cr by itself is well within the normal range, and would be the real indicator of renal problems (if it were elevated). Additionally, your ratio went up to 29 fom 20, both of which indicate that your excess protein is pre-renal. If your BUN continues to climb above 1.5, start thinking about worrying; until then, enjoy your weight loss, eat plenty of fat, and continue to make your life healthier and happier c:

Thanks! I'm getting retested next month and will see where the numbers are. – Sarah Jun 21 2012 at 23:28

How often are you working out, and how hard?

That is usually the culprit for elevated bun and creatinine.

I lift 12-lb dumbbells 2x per week. Trying to improve so I can move up to 15-lb. Otherwise just easy walking or stationery bike, a little yoga. Never been good at cardio. – Sarah Feb 2 2012 at 4:13
I meant stationary. Geez. – Sarah Feb 2 2012 at 4:14

This is a very small difference and probably meaningless. The ratio is indicative of your hydration status on the day of the blood draw and is not reflective of your diet. You could repeat the sample non-fasting and it will likely improve.

It was non-fasting. I'd had plenty of water too. – Sarah Feb 2 2012 at 4:20

Hi BUN not reflective of diet? Not necessarily. Go eat 500g of protein and your BUN will more than likey increase. Go easy on protein. Eat more fat. – Namby Pamby Mar 1 2012 at 16:45
