What foods are the best for feeding our good bacteria without also feeding the bad bacteria and yeast? What foods kill bad bacteria and yeast without killing good bacteria?

Agree with what has been suggested. Probably a good idea to keep a list of all fermented foods handy: natto, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir. I also have miso handy in my fridge. Lacto pickles (love these). Greek yogurt - also sheep and goat. Kombucha.

Remember.. since the lacto bacteria found in each probiotic food are not the same, and every bacto has a different role in the body, it’s kind of a good idea to include a variety of these naturally fermented foods in your diet. Make sure that all are non-pasteurized as the pasteurization process destroy most of the goodies that make probiotic foods so amazing for you. If you have trouble finding then make your own - it's not hard I swear.

And when you're eating all this tastiness at home? Open the jar, using chopsticks/fork/fingers, eat. No heating, k? K.

Bonus: Robb, Mark, someone Paleo's take on fermented foods :)

Sauerkraut and kimchi. Full-fat yogurt and Kefir from cows or goats. And... Bubbie's pickles. : )

You don't kill bad bacteria off, you crowd them out with good bacteria. Good bacteria produce various compounds that deter and kill off other bacteria. Eat probiotics.

Why don't you kill bad bacteria off? – Bruno Feb 7 2012 at 17:27
Because killing bacteria is pretty indiscriminate, at least the way humans do it with antibiotics. Now downing some good probiotics that benefit you and kill the baddies is win/win. – Matt Feb 7 2012 at 19:56

Your strategy should be two-fold

1) source good bacteria. Available through fermented foods (sauerkraut and kimchi already mentioned) and fresh vegetables (don't wash them too much). Being physically intimate with other healthy people is also a good way to expose yourself to more bacteria.

2) feed the good bacteria. Try and get a lot oligo-saccharides in your diet. These soluble fibre feed the bacteria in your gut and help them flourish. You could supplement with FOS or just eat a lot more onions, leeks, cauliflower - basically, veggies that make you fart.

I have read information from various sources suggesting that FOS in supplements or foods such as the ones you mentioned feed both good and bad bacteria, although I don't know if it is true. Another question relevant to this discussion is whether the gas you get from foods like the ones you mentioned is derived from the good or the bad bacteria. If it is from both, then eating those foods aren't necessarily good to eat if you suspect you have dysbiosis of some form. – Jon Feb 7 2012 at 19:38

Probiotics helped me a great deal with digestion. I was sluggish after eating. I took a 75 billion viable cells per pill kind (sold at GNC- for one), and have not gotten tired after eating since. I had been on anti-biotics, and stumbled across this at this vitamin store.
