I thought it would be nice to have a thread for us over-55 ladies to discuss this way of eating and ways to improve its usefulness to our health.

Any other ladies over 55 here?

Just turned 58. 90 lbs down X nearly 9 years with a host of health issues 100% resolved as well. Great idea to start a thread for >55yrs women! Thank you. – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 16:56
Mem, I'm enjoying reading your posts and comments here. All the best to you! How delightful that you are doing so well. – PaleoGran Jun 20 2011 at 16:46
Paleogran, if you are able to see this, I had to suspend you because I wanted to talk to you about your flagging, but it turned out that the email address on your account was fake. Please email us and put a real email address in your profile if you would like to be re-instated as a member. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 22 2012 at 20:20

I'm 52.51 . Grey Hair has been around a fair number of years, I'm perimenopausal, but every time I go beyond 50 days, I figure I could be starting the 1 year countdown! (I was so disappointed when I got to 90, but didn't get to 91 days.) I'm ready for Crone-hood!

That said, I've been doing Primal about 2 months, and I noticed yestday that the knee pain I've had since I was 40ish is gone. Up and down a flight of stairs with no pain. My "IBS" has vanished. That happened within 2 weeks of going Primal. My energy level has soared. I'm not going hungry, and get to 'full' easy. Zero cravings beyond the first couple of weeks. It's been amazing. Regulary in Ketosis, because I'm doing under 50 carbs a day. I check my bs regularly, and fasting ranges from a low of 63 to 80ish. Oh, and I dropped 20 lbs, with probably another 40 to go.

Downside: my hot flashes are worse though. Bummer. Not sure there's a Primal/Paleo fix for that besides giving up and going for bio-identical hormones.

I'm looking to start weight training of some sort, but don't know what, and am looking for recommendations.

Don't let that 1 year countdown talk fool you. I also started counting after 6 months until it all came back a few weeks later, and heavy as if to make up for the lost months. Before that is was 3 weeks, 3 months, 2 weeks, 4 months, etc. for about 18 months. Since going paleo a few months ago it's back to every 4 weeks. And I read on some forums from women where it came back after 1 year and even 2 years. Don't forget that most women over 50 had everything removed and so that already brings the number of "older" menstruating women down. I'm 52 and also more than ready for it to STOP. – ulcova Oct 14 2011 at 16:00

Oh, gee - I'm only 54 and a third, can I belong if I wear a pink hat or "paleo" button or something? ;-)

I think I'm feeling better than I did 5 years ago, lots fewer aches and pains, more energy, and doing better every day.

I am 68 years old and started paleo about a month ago and have lost 6 pounds drinking cream, eating butter, eggs and meat. I've been on a statin for about 10 years and quit taking it on April 1st. At first I thought I might be jeopardizing my health, but I have never felt better. I take a yoga class twice a week (one tailored for "women of a certain age" mostly stretching) and do tai-chi (24 moves Yang style) every day and my husband and I do low impact aerobics and a little weight lifting to exercise videos. I've read Gary Taubes' book Good Calories, Bad Calories and it was an eyeopener to me to find out that fat does not make you fat. I think I will pay for a blood test to check my lipids as I'm afraid my Doc will have a stroke if she gives me a blood test because when I stopped statins once before my cholesterol levels shot up. I am interested to hear other women's experience with giving up statins. Thank you for this post.

I'm totally impressed, especially with your varied movement/exercise activities! Thanks for sharing. – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:23
Your welcome, mem. An update is that my LDL cholesterol shot way up and a cardiologist and I decided that I should take 10 mm of Zocor. My numbers are still high six months later, but much lower than they would have been w/o the statin. In addition to the above I'm taking a outdoor hula hooping class on Sat. and my husband and I are trying to learn how to juggle. My sister says, "You are never too old to have a happy childhood." – Doris Jun 22 2011 at 13:56

Me! Me! I'm not 100% paleo, though, but I am working in that direction. However, I am not so sure that I feel any different from your typical under-55 person :-)

I'll be happy to join in, but for a few days my internet access is going to be somewhat limited (on vacation). But I'll check in when I can and see what's up and if there are other "old" ladies like us!

Will look forward to hearing more after your return from vacation! – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:26

Which vacation was that? Oh, the cruise back on Labor Day last year. Well, I have since been on three cruises....one of them the Low Carb Cruise. Totally fun! No weight gain, but doing paleo doesn't work too well on a cruise ship. And no, now that I'm 61, I STILL don't feel any older than I was at 18....at least not physically, but then when I was 18 I was eating SAD...mucho SAD. :-) – GHarkness Jun 13 2011 at 18:25

Good Morning, Ladies! How lovely to find others here.

Elfreda, pink hat or no, I'm glad you posted! I, too, feel better than I did five years ago. I eat Lacto-Paleo, and keep track of grams of carbs, proteins and fat, and count calories, too. I could give the same testimony that you did. It's such a relief to feel better each day.

Doris, I've never been on statins, so can't be of any help. Hopefully, some other ladies will see this thread and post. How wonderful that you do Tai Chi. It's so beautiful to watch, and I'm sure it feels grand to do it. I do a bit of yoga, very simple. I walk, do Callanetics and other ballet training, and jump on a rebounder (mini-trampoline), garden, and various stretching routines. I enjoy my privacy and quiet.

Gharkness, I think Paleo has a very broad definition. I follow Dr. Kurt Harris' guidelines at his website, http://www.paleonu.com/

and also Peter Dobromylskyj's ideas at his blog, Hyperlipid:

http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/

Betsy, glad you posted!

Deb, I've just noticed that tiny type under my original post. Thanks for posting. I eat Lacto-Paleo and thoroughly enjoy that high butter fat.

Hope you all have a very nice Saturday morning!

GHarkness, I also follow Dr. Kurt Harris on PaNu and Peter D on Hyperlipid. Good guidelines and science. This blog provides a venue to discuss how paleo is working for our age and gender. Thanks everybody. – Doris Sep 4 2010 at 23:06

I'm in my 60's and paleo-ish. Grow a garden and do real sun not pills for vitamin D, heading to Mexico in the winter.

Don't do ballet but I did wheelbarrow and spread two truckloads of dirt last week!

Anna, thanks much for posting. Goodness, your wheelbarrow exercise was a lot! My gardening is on a smaller scale. – PaleoGran Sep 5 2010 at 21:28
Haha! The two new knees I got last summer are working quite well now thank goodness. This caper was to redo the lawn while we had the chance to get a truck nearby- the neighbours removed a lot of trees recently and cleared the runway. – henny Sep 6 2010 at 4:45
Anna, you are amazing! You must have gotten the best knee replacements available. How wonderful that you are doing so very well. – PaleoGran Sep 6 2010 at 13:38

68 and been very low carb for 8 years and strict paleo for last 3 years. Feel great, active, and actually feel better than when I was 30.

I'll be 59 next month, and I've been low carb for several years, now leaning more directly into Paleo/Pānu. Can't do starches very often due to blood glucose issues, but I'm on no meds. I have been taking D3 (sunshine isn't much in MA), K2, and krill oil for the past few months and I also find these help me physically and mentally. My aching knees, shortness of breath, swollen feet, gum disease, high blood pressure and GERD are all gone, and sleep apnea is much improved! Now if only I can figure how to trim off this weight! It's a glacially paced process for me, but I persevere.

Gisela, hope your are doing well on your food plan. I'm so glad you have seen so many good results. – PaleoGran Jan 2 2011 at 8:47
Well, your health results are amazing! WOWOWOWO! Can you tell us a little about your eating - losing or not losing experience and what/how you eat? – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:02

My mother is 73. She lost some weight, feels great, and no longer has crabby mood swings since going paleo. She also is much more energetic and active. She says she loves the diet as she gets to eat as much as she wants of tasty food and still feel great and lose weight! She says it's the best diet ever. However, although she finds paleo to be easy, she finds internet to be confusing so I hope you will forgive her for not coming here in person. She just wanted me to say that you can start this diet at any age and still get lots of benefits, maybe even more obvious benefits than if one were younger and stronger.

Eva, thank you for posting about your mother enjoying eating Paleo. I agree with her about the internet. I, too, think the benefits are obvious. I have noticed on other forums that it is the older ones who tend to be the ones who post about keeping the diet and not eating things off of their food plans. Aches and pains are good motivators for some of us. Thanks again for your post. :) – PaleoGran Jan 2 2011 at 8:47

Yes, thank you for sharing this! I have been a Curves memeber since 05 and frequently workout with a 93 yr woman who has been working out for 12 years. She also walks about 3 miles each am. And I exercise with many women in their 50's -60's and 70's - many with 3-4 sizes of weight loss. Eva, how did your Mom find this way of eating initially? – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:13

Well, I'll be 55 in September, so I'm counting myself in. I went low-carb/paleo in October of 2009. I promptly lost 50lbs without being hungry or feeling deprived. My body also healed from diabetic neuropathy in my feet that was so painful that I could hardly walk. I recently had to buy a pair of size 8 jeans, down from a tight size 18, so that made me really happy. I have started adding exercise into my life, and I feel better than I have in decades.

Wow! I love these healing stories! How did you initially get introduced to low carb/paleo? Also, may women in our age range experience stalls. Did you? If not, what do you think prevented you from stalling? – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:15

I was 64 in December, in and out of various LC "diets" for years; did my first figure competition just after my 60th birthday. Talk about wacky nutrition!!! Anyway, I'm so enjoying reading about everyones experiences and success... and improved health. I'm weaning myself off of grains; pretty much been off of sugar/starches for a long time. Trying to figure out if I can make "just eating" work; or, if I will continue my daily menu making on SparkPeople so that I have a clue about where my calorie levels are. I wear a BodyBugg so I know how many calories I burn each day; I go to the gym and do resisitance training using Tabata, and 1/2 hr. cardio ... just walking, hardly qualifies as cardio!!! Anyway, take care all, wishing you coninued good health. Sherry

Hi all! I'm 64. I've been 100% primal blueprint for 2.5 months now and I'm thriving. My only exception is that I eat at least 2 whole grapefruit each day. I have always been a fruit eater.

I'm finding now that many fruits--and even lettuce salads!--cause cravings, but grapefruit don't and they are keeping me very REGULAR digestion wise. I also think they helped my metabolic syndrome switch to efficient fat-burning.

Thanks for sharing! It sounds like what you are doing is working for you. Interesting about the foods you are finding that cause cravings for you. I love grapefruit, but don't eat them regularly. They are more on what I'd call my "treat schedule." – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:32

Hello Everybody,

Certainly I'm not 55+ yet (I'm 28),but for the last couple of years I've been feeling like I'm 82. My story in short: I've always been on the heavier side my entire life with the most fat on my belly.A Couple of years ago I decided to go to the gym to lose the fat with Cardio,I cut out junkfood and started reading labels to see which products contained the least fat. I still wasn't losing my bellyfat,so I upped the exercises until it dwindled towards an obsessive compulsive habit, which I didn't even enjoy,of going 5 to 6days a week and being even more critical of what I'd eat. Long story short,I can't exercise anymore bc my knees hurt like hell,as it turns out amongst others I suffer from Lyme's disease and a leaky gut. To tackle the leaky gut,I need to eat Paleo (with a lot of restrictions bc of various food intolerances.)

Although I rationally know better,I still feel so much fear and anxiety bc I'm afraid to get fat again, especially bc I'm not exercising (and the media tells you that daily exercise/elevation of heartrate is key to lose/steady your weight). The problem is that I'm now underweight,I think my fatdistribution is off,bc I have no boobs left anymore,so I need to gain weight but that's making me even more nervous,bc I'm scared I'll gain even more than before! I was already stuck in this mental pattern of food vs exercise, but bc of a lot of Paleo-folks I've become scared of veggies too (carrot, beets, squash) let alone fruit and sweet potatoes! I'm mentally feeling more&more like crap and starting to miss things like pizza and almost feel like giving up healing myself, just for the temporary false illusion of happiness...cause my brain and body don't seem to be functioning at peace with eachother. I'm becoming more and more bored of eating Paleo,bc of my fear I don't prepare meals very well,it feels like too much hassle to come up with what to eat and to preapare it. I can't do the vigorous exercise routines of CF or MN,but I don't want to be compulsively be moving around either bc of my fear. Could you matured wiser ladies ease my mind a bit/help me out? Like what does your eating pattern look like on a daily basis?

As in all other things, boredom on Paleo is pretty much self-inflicted. That should give you hope that you have TOTAL power to cure your boredom. One thing I do--at least once per week I season my main dish with turmeric. It has a nice bite and tastes "different." Also, with intermittent fasting you can make sure you're really hungry when you eat which makes most food taste great. – Nance Jun 16 2011 at 19:01

Not quite there - I'm 48 - but I've been paleo for a year and would be more than happy to exchange information/ideas with other "mature" individuals. :)

Yep, I'm over 55.

Hi Betsy, Would you be willing to share more info? :) – Atkins-witha-loincloth Jun 13 2011 at 17:28
