Hello all,

I am looking for a protein bar that is ideal for refuelling after long distance endurance events; it needs to be rich in branch chain amino acids and moderate to high GI carbohydrates. Paleo friendly would be a plus but isn't essential.

The endurance event is a multi-day ultra-marathon in the Atacama and unfortunately all food must be carried so the usual post workout routine of meat and berries isn't really feasible.

Most protein bars that I have come across label themselves as "low carb" which is more contusive to weight lifters that want to get ripped.

Anyway I'm rambling...

Could anyone provide me with a link to a carb + protein rich bar (Paleo friendly is better but optional)

Failing that can anyone provide me with a recipe that could be followed to make them? I'm not afraid to get my fingers messy :-)

Thanks for your help in advance :-D

Does it have to be in one bar? I would think Lara Bars would give you the carbs you need and jerky would give you the protein you need.

Or you could make your own pemmican bars (which sound like a lot of work for something that doesn't seem too appetizing).

I'm not sure why having to carry dried meat should be a hindrance. As for wanting carbs, this would be where grains have their place. High energy density and portable. Still, I'd want to avoid the endless chemicals in the shop-bought bars (might as well have a candy bar if you're going that way). There's quite a few recipes on here already I think eg:

Basically you're looking at melting chocolate, whizzing up some nut butter, throw in dried fruit, oats, maybe even some whey powder. Alternatively, go to http://youbars.com and have almost complete control over what goes in your bar.

Run barefoot. The squirrels won't hear you coming.

Nevermind, there are no squirrels in the atacama.

I actually camped there for a week in the pan de azucar area. Not much of anything there. Also since its the driest desert in the world water is highly important. I don't know much about "ultra" endurance but I would consider some cytomax+bcaa. Then a little jerky, nuts, etc as needed.

Check out www.youbars.com. You can build your own custom bar. I've been doing this for a while making my own mostly-paleo bars. They're a bit expensive. But when I have a really busy day, I just grab one of these and then I don't worry about lunch.

Try http://store.nugonutrition.com/products/52102.html

I like it when riding long distance. It's not Paleo but at least it's dairy free.

I love nugo bars. I also love Clif Builder Bars though I'm getting away from dairy products due to a food sensitivity.

Quest bars: dairy & sucralose (splenda)

Nugoprotein: Organic line has soy. Soy-free bar isn't organic: http://store.nugonutrition.com/category/nugo-free.html

I like the Rise Bars myself but unless you get soy, there's not much protein.

Closest I've found is by PaleoLife Foods. All-organic, 17g protein from white rice (they recognize the antinutrient issue w/brown), nuts, seeds. Plenty of fat from the nuts, coconut, & chocolate. Sweetened with only honey. Low carb (19g)

Maybe you're looking for something with more carbs/sugar? The organic food bar - protein has the highest protein (22g) out of any I've found with no dairy or soy.

Rise protein bars only use whey, no soy. That's why I like them! – misstenacity Sep 17 at 15:55
You're right. My mistake! If you can tolerate dairy this would probably be my first option. My only question is this: they say "FREE OF: GLUTEN, PRESERVATIVES, GMOS, SOY, PEANUTS + KOSHER" so why not just go with organic ingredients?? – JoeyChang Sep 19 at 22:09

Best bars I've seen that are simple, widely available and tasty are Rise Bars. They have an almond honey flavor that is almonds, honey and whey. That's it.

Here's a product info link: http://risebar.com/products/almond-honey/

I mentioned above why I think PaleoLife's Paleo Bars are the best dairy-free Paleo bar, and now I'm hosting a giveaway of 3 boxes ($39 each) on my blog. Enter the contest here

Disclaimer: I have no financial interest in or affiliation with PaleoLife Foods, Inc (or Amazon). This bar just happens to go perfectly well with my blog's theme of sharing convenient Paleo recipes & products with autoimmune patients.
