Does lactose consumption (of those with the enzyme lactase) have a similar effect to our bodies insulin production as added sugars in SAD foods?

here's a study that may be relevant, if you can make sense of it, entitled "Glycemia and insulinemia lactose equivalent meals of milk and other food proteins" ajcn.org/content/80/5/1246.abstract – daz Feb 8 2012 at 3:53

Well it gives an insulin response but not from the lactose alone. A good read from Mark.

( p.s. testing blood glucose is not the same as testing insulin reaction. A food can produce an insulin response without a corresponding rise in bs.)

Consuming carbohydrate and not seeing a rise in BG would indicate an insulin response. – Matt Feb 8 2012 at 1:08
I agree, of course, I should have said I don't go too low or too high. – Nance Feb 8 2012 at 1:14
Glucose scores and insulin scores do not go hand in hand Matt. That was my point. – Shari Bambino Feb 8 2012 at 1:54
Agreed, a BG reading only gives a very indirect reading on what your insulin levels are. – Matt Feb 8 2012 at 12:44

As in all things, I assume people vary widely in this.

I just did an in-depth bg test and I'm happy to report my bg barely noticed when I ate about a cup of home-made yogurt with a banana. I think it was 106 or something 45 minutes later.

How is it that you ALWAYS have the answers to my questions, Nance? Thank you. :D – Soccertanker Feb 8 2012 at 1:02
As pointed out by Shari and Matt below, I was measuring bg not insulin. So I should say my bg doesn't go too low or too high, so whatever insulin response I have there's no difficulty like that I've experienced from straight fruit or starch. – Nance Feb 8 2012 at 1:16

It's not the lactose, but the proteins in milk that are more insulinogenic. Nothing wrong with a food being insulinogenic though.

Glad to have an answer for this as well. The nutritionist that I was sent to in my first pregnancy when I was diagnosed with Gestastional Diabetes told me to avoid milk in the mornings as it spikes insulin levels. But I disproved her on many other points of nutrition as well.

if, as Taubes indicates, insulin promotes fat storage, then a higher insulinogenic response from dairy products is something to pay attention to.
