Hi All,

I just started CF (I've done 2 Foundations classes). I've been eating Paleo for a year and doing Bikram yoga regularly (about 2x/wk). I stopped doing Bikram a couple weeks before I started CF (I had to save the $$ somehow!!). I look very lean, but not muscular (hence my desire to try CF).

This morning, after two days in a row of Foundations at night, I woke up feeling so nauseous I couldn't eat and with some pretty harsh digestive symptoms..ahem. Hours later, I am still feeling too nauseous to eat so I'm force-feeding myself some tea at the moment (Yogi, lemon-ginger), just to make sure I stay hydrated and hoping it will soothe my stomach. I got my usual 8 hours of sleep but I feel tired, sore and totally unmotivated to do anything. It's almost, though not exactly, like I'm sick with the flu (I can tell I'm not "sick" in a viral sense, not sure how I know, I can just feel the difference).

Last night, post workout, I grilled some chicken thigh meat in coconut oil with a side of sauteed cauliflower also in coconut oil, with curry seasoning and ate half an avocado. The meal was a little high on the fatty side of things, but I figured that was probably a good thing because I would need the energy. Also, there should be no risk that the meal wasn't clean/paleo (and I have had a stomach of steal my whole life, anyway, even before I was paleo, so I'm doubting that I am experiencing symptoms because I got "glutened"). And the chicken was fresh.

Is this NORMAL? What in the world is going on here? Could it be the intensity of the workout is wreaking havoc on my body? Thanks for your thoughts. All the posts on CF are scaring me, so reassurance that CF is not slowly killing me would be nice. :)

I think you are sick, in a viral/bacterial/illness sense. You might know how you feel when you are sick with the flu or virus, but maybe this is a food poinsoning or a different virus. Doubt that it is the CF at night after day two of foundations. – Joy Feb 8 2012 at 16:37

Yogi Lemon/Ginger - my favourite!

I used to do Bikram, up until a few months ago, and am currently CF + lifting 4 days a week. In my opinion.. you're either sick, ate something bad, or bonked at the box. Please note though that Foundations should not be tanking you out so badly that you are at that point - I'm actually not comfortable that you are doing back-to-back being so new, and should only be doing 2-3 a week with a day in-between.

Take a few days off, hydrate, eat more food - your muscles need fuel to grow on. When you are feeling back to optimum levels, go back in. Talk to your coaches as well - you're paying them, not the other way 'round, so don't be shy. Also make sure you drink water before going in, during breaks in the WOD's, afterwards. Toss coconut water in there as well if you need it. Hydration is key when you're CF'ing :)

Nerd Alert! Bonking: Depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by sudden fatigue and loss of energy. Milder instances can be remedied by brief rest and the ingestion of food or drinks containing carbohydrates. The condition can usually be avoided by ensuring that glycogen levels are high when the exercise begins, maintaining glycogen levels during exercise by eating or drinking carbohydrate-rich substances, or by reducing exercise intensity.

@JeSuisJuBa, checked out your blog and other Q/As on PH--Love! Thank you for your answer and for the "nerd alert!" I am such a newbie and that was not only thoughtful but well-explained! As to your concern about two days in a row of Foundations--I will be sure to ask the trainers about that (thanks for the encouragement on that front, it can be intimidating to ask Qs). Our first class had a WOD at the end, but last night, no WOD. So hopefully, they aren't driving me to "bonk." :) Now I get two glorious days of rest until Friday. You can bet I will NOT be squeezing a yoga class in there. – PaleoVenus Feb 8 2012 at 17:16
Also, curious...why did you stop Bikram? – PaleoVenus Feb 8 2012 at 18:09
Hey @PaleoVenus! Had to stop Bikram due to $$. My CF joint is stupid expensive, but I truly love it to death and it's really helped me a bunch. Something had to give.. sadly the Bikram. But only temporarily! When more funds come in, then so does Bikram :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Feb 8 2012 at 22:55
Glad you like my silly blog! It's good times :) Re: my answer/nerd alert - I try to be as thorough, and interesting, with my answers as much as I can - makes sense to get it all down so there's less back and forth for the poster. I also like to make sure people are extra prepared for future trivia matches. More info - richer experience you know? Glad you're taking a break but definitely monitor how you're feeling.. N=1 for CF is much different than any other sport activity I've been involved in. Feel better! – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Feb 8 2012 at 22:57

I'm guessing it's the chicken. One of the easiest cross contamination items out there. Little salmonella goes a long ways.

Thanks James. I actually don't think the symptoms are bad enough to be salmonella, there is no vomiting, just a feeling of nausea that is preventing me from eating. I suppose it could be mild? I have no experience with it. I eat raw eggs, undercooked meat and sketchy deli food (paleo-style) all the time and never have trouble. I guess there's always a first time though... – PaleoVenus Feb 8 2012 at 17:20

It can be a mild episode. Nausea, stomache ache, mild diarrhea and gas, aches/pains/fatigue. You don't become immune to it after infection (so you can get more than once), and hits between 6 and 72 hours (and can last a week). But it only takes one bad episode to really be overly paranoid on chicken. :) It shoots out both ends. My last time was like a horror movie. – James Feb 8 2012 at 19:25
