I understand that a question similar to this one had already been asked, but things are a tad different (age, workout level, etc).
I am 24 and have been strict Paleo for about 38 days (no cheats at all). I have been CrossFitting 3/week since the first week of January.
This past week I have not been getting a decent amount of sleep (6-8 hours), because I keep waking up so hot and sweaty! I sleep in very light clothing (if at all haha!) and the temperature is set at 67-68 (which is pretty low for us). I thought that it could be eating too close to bed time, but that isn't the case because I've kind of experimented the last couple of nights to see what the culprit could be. Needless to say, I am still waking up hot and full of sweat. My husband suggested that it could be the quick boost in metabolism but what do you think? Is anybody else experiencing something like this?
UPDATE: Yeah, it was something as silly as my bedroom fan placement. My husband and I rearranged our bedroom, and since moving our fan back to it's original place, things are better! Sometimes I think we think too hard. ;)
One of the reasons for night sweats, nightmares, etc. is low blood sugar episodes while you sleep (diabetics will have this). If you've got a blood glucose monitor, maybe check it at night/in the morning. Lowest blood sugar time is supposed to be around 2am.
The recommendations I've seen are a small snack with carbs/protein before bed (or if you wake in the middle of the night).
I tested the effects of eating large quantities of fruit nearly a week ago. Sadly for me, the test threw both my bp and bg way out of whack so I went back to my tried-and-true ancestral eating.
I mentioned the above only because, to my dismay, I also disturbed several months of blissful, undisturbed sleep patterns. I've been waking up feeling too warm and I've been sleeping smaller blocks of hours at a time. My waking bg has also been higher.
I've gone back to making sure my first solid food of every day is a nice chunk of fatty meat and I'm doing better each night. I hope to be back to 7-8 hours of great sleep with a low morning bg in another few days.
Could my experience be relevant to yours? Did you happen to change your macronutrient ratios recently? BTW, I do agree with your husband that evening eating can cause the same problem--I have to finish eating by about 4-5 pm every day or sleep/temperature profiles change in similar ways.
Hi Ashley! I'm 31 and I started eating the PALEO diet way around March this year. After about 6 weeks of eating strictly Paleo foods (and I was NOT exercising by the way, mainly because I instantly began to lose weight when I began eating Paleo) I started getting MAJOR night sweats!!! I'm not kidding, I was waking up completely drenched in sweat!!! It was disgusting. I had to change my sheets and buy a new pillow! This had never happened to me before so I went to the doctor after about TWO WEEKS of this! She's very smart, she told me my body is just cleansing itself. I also asked my massage therapist and he said the same thing. The night sweats have stopped now, but one thing I do notice now is that whenever I stray from eating Paleo foods (for instance last weekend I ate a poutine - disgusting I know - and then I had cake... well that night omg I had an episode of a major night sweat like I had had during that previous two week period). I love the Paleo diet! This just shows that the Paleo diet truly works! It's clean eating and after a while your body likes it and wants to get rid of the bad "stuff" from foods like pastas and grains...
