Last night and tonight I ate several teaspoons of coconut oil, just before bed, in an effort to fight off a certain lipid-coated virus. Last night I got maybe 4 hours of sleep, and I usually get 7-8 no problem. Tonight, same thing - ate a bunch of coconut oil, and now I've been laying awake for hours!

I used to get insomnia before going paleo, but this is the first time in a LONG time since I've had trouble sleeping 2 nights in a row. These last 2 nights are the first times I've eaten straight coconut oil just before bed.

Has anything like this happened to you? Any thoughts on this matter?

Was it the cocnut oil or this? paleohacks.com/questions/96326/… – henny Feb 9 2012 at 12:49
Interesting... I hadn't thought of that. Next time I can't sleep, I'll check the lunar cycle. – AnarchyCaveman Feb 9 2012 at 22:36

I have a spoonful or two of coconut oil mixed with almond butter as a "dessert" almost every night and sleep like a baby. Individual tolerances/effects certainly vary. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Feb 17 2012 at 18:51

I've found out the hard way, taking anything straight "oil" right before bed wires me. Fish oil is the worst culprit for me, but coconut oil is a close second, and I'll be lying there in bed all antsy wondering if I'd look like a crazy lady raking leaves at 2am. Starch plus oil seems to knock me out though. – Happy Now Feb 17 2012 at 19:24
almond butter most likely helps the sleep because of the magnesium and the fact that its ground so it's already mostly digested. try the two together as suggested maybe? – camila Mar 30 2012 at 2:10

The MCTs inside coconut oil speed up metabolism. Maybe not what you want prior to bed :-) In larger doses they make some people nauseous. Some unfortunate folks like me happen to be allergic to coconut products, this may also be an option.

I would suggest you don't eat it right before bedtime and maybe together with a meal. And if strange reactions persist, just leave it out a few days.

I learned the hard way not to eat coconut products before bedtime! They give you a burst of energy. I had no idea why I suddenly couldn't get to sleep. I did some research and found that the culprit was the warm glass of coconut milk I was drinking before bed, thinking it would help me sleep!

Coconut oil = large amount of easily digested energy. Take a slug of that before bed and you'll probably be bouncing off the walls.

Props to you for at least doing an N=2 experiment! A few more experiments and you might be able to pin it on the coconut oil. Get over whatever virus you have now, and then try a few times. If it causes you problems then, that more strongly supports the idea that the coconut oil is having some effect.

It sounds like you might, well, have a virus. That may be affecting your sleep. As far as eating coconut oil, people have tried pretty much any time and any situation, and had all possible reactions.

I also get more energy when taking cocnut oil before bed. Takes a few hours to fall asleep. I feel dumb because this is the third time I've done it-->currently regretting it. Going to start taking it in the morning.

Considering that the MCTs are used along with grassfed butter to make bulletproof coffee which dave says "will keep you satisfied with level energy for 6 hours if you need it" I think this is a likely culprit as well.

I find that except for incredibly soporific foods (e.g. warm glass of milk when I was a child), any food right before bed will keep me up.

Yes- I have chronic fatigue and sleep 10 hours a night and can't wake up in the morning and now two nights in a row I have not slept b/c of taking coconut oil before bed! There is also a new article on livestrong.com explaining coconut oil activates hunger...urgh!

I discovered taking coconut oil before bed interferes with sleep. It took a few nights to realize what was causing the problem with sleeping. I love it during the day, and before workouts because of the explosion of energy it gives.

I too find I can't sleep if I have coconut oil in the evening. It gives me so much energy, I like to have it early in the day instead. Interesting article re the full moon henny! I'm going to watch for that on the rare occasions when I don't sleep well.

I'm the exact same way. If I have Coconut Oil anytime within 4 hours before bedtime I get insomnia. I have my last coconut oil drink (coconut oil and boulion) around 6pm and I can now fall asleep easier than when I was drinking it later in the evening.

Consider checking your metabolic type. Certain types are energized by fats.

I love this forum! This happened to me a couple nights ago, and I didn't even link it to coconut oil. Now I need to pay attention to see if it repeats.

And on the red wine front, I have concluded that drinking more than a couple glasses of wine later than about 6pm causes me to wake in the middle of the night. On the assumption that it might be allergy related, I took 500mg of Quercetin and a Turmeric/curcumin supplement. I had read that Quercetin has an anti-histamenic effect and curcumin is an anti-inflamatory. This did seem to help. I would like to hear if this works for anyone else.
