I know there are solid reasons to give people as to why they should go paleo, but it has been my experience that what often piques someone's interest in a subject are not the good, deep parts, but the shallow ones. Some of the "shallow" things I've noticed about paleo on this board are:

  • Can eat real food and still lose weight.

  • Better ability to hold your liquor (not sure I buy this one, but I have seen it mentioned).

  • Fewer wrinkles (due to not eating vegetable oils high in oxidants/free-radicals).

So, can anyone think of any other shallow benefits of going paleo? Something that can be used as an ice breaker to gain someone's interests by saying "Well, you know, if you go paleo..."

Are people claiming they can drink more now? Paleo has made me such a cheap date, I think it was all the booze sponging grains and late night trips to IHOP that used to allow me to drink more. – Happy Now Feb 10 2012 at 21:13

Amen to Happy Now's comment. 2 drinks and I'm 3 sheets to the wind :) – Clint Feb 10 2012 at 21:24
I third that comment. goodbye tolerance! – McMeghann Feb 10 2012 at 21:57
Apparently I'm one of those that has the opposite affect. I don't get hangovers since going Paleo. That also happened to me years ago when I did a cleanse on the Candida Diet. Don't know what it is but I am so grateful. – Bacosapien Feb 10 2012 at 23:29
I've taken to feeling a bit woozy on paleo rations. – thhq Feb 11 2012 at 14:59

I would add "eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and consider it healthy" – FED at LiveCaveman.com Feb 10 2012 at 21:24
I agree FED..... – Eric Feb 10 2012 at 21:44

Shallowest reason: looking in the mirror (or any reflective surface) and thinking "Damn..."

not why I did it, but there are a lot of PHers with their abs as user pics... – Caleb the Hobbit Feb 11 2012 at 14:44

My two shallow paleo goals are to look good naked and to be able to hold my own in a bar fight (one may lead to the other...ha). For the first time in my life I want to be vain-worthy.

Looking better naked was the entire reason I started down this path. It's not the only reason I stay on it, but vanity definitely got this started for me. – j3wcy Feb 10 2012 at 21:11

It would be cool to look good while fighting naked... – legup Feb 11 2012 at 5:22

Look good naked. Look good with clothes on. Look good with clothes on so people wonder if you look good naked.

Not having to note where bathrooms are, or have a contingency plan in the back of my mind in case 'intestinal discomfort' dictated the direction of my evening.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying it makes your bowl movements more regular, or something else? – Talldog Feb 11 2012 at 14:48
Hack my constipation.... – thhq Feb 11 2012 at 14:57
Exactly Tall dog. I could never be a hundred percent clear when gluten was a part of my diet. I actually got tested for celiac, inconclusive by the way, but there have always been 'issues' until I eliminated it. In the words of my doctor; "if cutting gluten from your diet solves the problems, then why not just keep doing it?" – lil' Richard frm tx fan Feb 11 2012 at 15:04

Any "shallow" reason to go paleo, is still a great reason to go paleo. "Going" paleo is great for anyone, regardless of the paths/reasons why we came here. We aren't vegans, we don't need to justify our health by moral or superficial/trendy standards. It works. Who cares what your reasons are? Glad you're here.

It gives you a strong jaw line. "I know from experience, dude" -Chris Farley. This is huge with the ladies--I read it on Psychology Today. kidding, but serious...

I did once see a comment that paleo make men more masculine and women more feminine. Is this what you are referring to, or something else? – Talldog Feb 11 2012 at 15:00

Yep, exactly along those lines. I'll try to track it down. – Craig Feb 11 2012 at 18:06

I don't see how the first one that you mention is shallow?

I am paleo for the health benefits, no other reasons really. If I can get a 6 pack at the same time then that is just an added bonus. I know that there are lots of other people here who feel the same.

Definitely. For me it's all about controlling the pain caused by inflammation...but I am lovin' the side effects! – Bacosapien Feb 10 2012 at 23:35

Eat good food (bacon, eggs, steaks, etc.) AND get lean at the same time? Yes, please sign me up :-) I lost 100 pounds calorie counting and still craved sweets and processed foods. I found out i had a gluten sensitivity, started paleo in November and don't crave the bad foods anymore!

Health and satiety are great bonuses

Being able to feel righteous about not washing your hair or brushing your teeth.

I don't understand. Are yous saying you need to wash your hair less on paleo and brush your teeth less on paleo? – Talldog Feb 11 2012 at 14:58
No @taildog, only that if you choose not to you've got Grok to back you up on your choice. Why use a brush? What are sticks for? – thhq Feb 11 2012 at 15:22
There are advantages to using less soap. – Ebice Feb 12 2012 at 6:30

The notion of being able to eat whatever you want (paleo foods of course) without limitation.

I wish this was true for me. I IF hard and lift ridiculous amounts to baaarely lose. Although I've got a history of losing and gaining dozens of pounds on quite a few different diets. – lil' Richard frm tx fan Feb 11 2012 at 13:59

I don't consider any of these reasons "shallow." Who defines that? For example, "eat real food and lose weight" seems 100% legit, rational, healthy, and an example of a rather profound revelation about how food works. That's anything but shallow in my opinion.

It keeps your teeth looking nice from not eating refined sugars.

I thought the idea of paleo was to have teeth like Austin Powers. – thhq Feb 11 2012 at 4:44
This would definitly be a plus for parents who feel they are depriving the kids by not letting their kids eat "typical" food. If I could prevent my current dental problems by going back in time and changing my diet I certainly would. – Talldog Feb 11 2012 at 14:56
