What are some small habits you have that might not be considered healthy but you can't seem to let go of.

  • biting my nails
  • seeing TV right before bed (been doing this for years)
  • touching my face
  • not giving my food a chance to cool down before I eat it
  • taking hot showers
  • using the computer

I honestly hate how I judge people based on their dietary choices. I think this is really unhealthy and I'm honestly trying hard to stop it.

I have a really hard time with this, too. I work in a restaurant and I constantly want to lecture people about their food choices, but I have to always keep my mouth shut. – Becky Biceps Feb 13 2012 at 0:19

I sit in front of the computer reading Paleohacks with posture so bad it's like I'm intentionally trying to reverse the natural curve of my spine. But I'm keto-adapted, so I'll be fine.

Ha! (extra BS characters so I can post...) – Rose Feb 11 2012 at 5:10

You just made me sit up in my chair. Thank you. – haxorize Feb 11 2012 at 15:53

I'm always on my tablet before I go to bed. I will just sit in bed and play around online for entirely too long. I'm thinking about having an electronics curfew for myself or making my bedroom an electronics free zone (I already moved my TV out) so I will be able to just go to bed instead of keeping myself up.

Yeah, we set up a "time saver" internet application that doesn't let us use the internet after 10 pm- it works great! – JeJ Feb 11 2012 at 0:16
Same thing... when my back hurts too much from the bad posture – malapert Feb 13 2012 at 2:14

the desire for "something sweet" after dinner -- usually squashed with 90% chocolate

eating while on the computer / checking my phone / reading

lately i've been wanting a glass of red after dinner as well

but the biggest of all: i stress myself out ABOUT EVERYTHING. i overthink, overanalyze, set up plans a, b and c, etc...exhausting.

Hot showers are unhealthy? C'mon now. Give yourself a break.

My bad habit: At least once a week I'll forget to set out my meat to defrost, which can throw off my schedule for the evening when I get home from work. Its more annoying than anything.

Not really unhealthy, but hot showers are bad for my skin because of my Rosacea. I hate not having unthawed meat in my fridge, especially if I am hungry. – ROB Feb 11 2012 at 0:01
No kidding. Its not like we can just grab a box of wheat thins and a diet coke and call it a day. Planning and preparation are crucial. I understand your reasoning re the shower. – Craig Feb 11 2012 at 0:06

I can relate to a great many of the habits others have listed. In no particular order, mine are:

--Going to bed too late/not getting enough sleep

--Drinking coffee all day long

--Reading while eating (I think that's especially nasty)

--Forgetting to put on a mask/goggles when I'm filing metal or otherwise working w/unhealthy shop materials

--Getting mad in traffic (seriously, I think this is extremely stressful, and stupid)

Red wine Fridays.

Freaking out at my computer when things go wrong.

Freaking out at calculus assignments and getting super stressed.

Not sleeping enough.

Cooking SO MUCH and then not doing dishes for 3 days...or 4....

Haha! I love the not doing dishes. I think my unhealthy thing is my dishwasher. No way I could give that up with two little kids and a messy husband living here! Before I got my dishwasher, I would leave the dishes for days, sometimes a week. It was bad... :) – Stephanie Feb 11 2012 at 14:40
If I could pick one item to have in my life, it would be a dishwasher! It's so bad, if someone comes by our place unexpected, I have a big cupboard that is just for hiding all my dirty dishes. Chuck everything in there, wipe the counter, and pretend it always looks like this. It is sooo bad that I've had to come up with this strategy to deal with it... – JeJ Feb 11 2012 at 14:56

I consider isolating and focusing on my various inconsistencies, shortcomings, and imperfections an unhealthy habit worthy of breaking. Still, I do it.

I'm very hard on myself too... :/ – Pedrita Feb 11 2012 at 13:22

I relate to several on your list.

Since starting paleo and getting off sugar and caffeine the nail biting has dramatically decreased, though I'm not used to my nails being longer yet. They seem much healthier, though.

I haven't owned a TV in years so no issue there, but I've definitely taken the computer usage way down. I deleted Facebook and Twitter and cleaned up my email inboxes (including taking the time to unsubscribe from all the spam I've become a target for over the years), and I've been getting outside in the fresh air much more in the past few months. I prefer spending time with people in person rather than staring at "status updates".

I also read the book "The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains" by Nicholas Carr, which is an expansion of his article Is Google Making Us Stupid?. Interesting stuff. I try to avoid being "plugged in" as much these days. No smartphone or tablet for me.

What's wrong with touching your face or eating hot food?

Good book recommendations. – ROB Feb 11 2012 at 0:30

Some of those you mentioned plus forgetting that I'm going no soap. Every time I rinse my hands, I end up rubbing them on the soap. I've thought of hiding the soap, but what would I tell guests if they ask me where the soap is? :D

I keep wondering when this is going to stop. I've been no soap/shampoo since September (this is actually how I found paleo!). Even though I haven't slipped up and accidently used it during a shower, I still get in sometimes and almost feel tense and start looking around the shower because I think I'm supposed to be doing something. I laugh every time as I relax and turn back to face the water, thinking "oh yeah, I just need this." – Invisible Caveman Feb 11 2012 at 0:18

I still use soap on my hands but I don't plan to ever use soap in the shower again. – LissaKae Feb 11 2012 at 0:28
@Invisible Caveman: Me too, except for the shampoo. I'm using baking soda, then apple cider vinegar, and a mixture of an egg yolk + clay + a drop of EVOO, lol – Pedrita Feb 11 2012 at 0:35
I tried the baking soda/vinegar combo for the first couple weeks which got me through the funky oily period, then I just dropped all of it. – Invisible Caveman Feb 11 2012 at 3:38
Yes, I went no shampoo recently, and my hair has been less and less oily, so I will probably be able to drop even these other things soon. Nice. :) – Pedrita Feb 11 2012 at 13:06

Weighing myself daily. Sometimes more than once. Worse than that is getting upset over a number, despite knowing everything I do about fat loss, glycogen, water retention, building lean mass, etc.

Ugh.
