I was just trying to explain to someone what I eat. They said "You don't eat grains? Your poor kidneys." What the hell are they talking about?

When people come out with a ridiculous statement like that (about a diet I've been undertaking and researching for so long) I like to ask them where they heard that fact - and could they email me the link to any related studies as I'd like to explore their statement further. I've not been sent a single study yet. – Suz - Paleo Oz Feb 15 2012 at 21:47

Unless this was some sort of a stab at a keto diet or something, which I am not on, I am still confused. sigh. – Lutfisk Feb 15 2012 at 22:06

They are probably assuming that without consuming grains, you are making up the bulk of your diet with protein and fat, the former of which is commonly implicated as being deleterious to kidney health in larger quantities. The belief is certainly persistent among healthcare professionals and the mainstream, correct or incorrect.

Their comment makes no sense in any way. Trying to figure out such nonsense is a waste of effort.

.... What a weird comment!

I'm guessing because, at least in veterinary medicine, high protein intake "causes" kidney disease. However, that statement was recently proven false in mainstream medicine. Sure, high protein may not be great for cats who already have kidney disease.
