I have taken the last 2 days off from my normal heavy lifting schedule, and have noticed my libido is noticeably higher than normal (that is saying a lot coming from an 18 year old guy). Occasionally, I'll take a whole week off and also notice a huge rise in libido.
It makes sense if you look at the situation from neolithic times. Men hunting would be more focused on killing the prey than their honey back in the cave.
Any theories or science behind this? What hormones could be at play to cause this change? Would love to hear all your answers :)
Yea sounds like you might be over-training/over-stress resulting in low libido?
I'm complete opposite, once I get my energy back after a good lifting session its up big time for me.
Levels of prolactin hormone can rise after exercise. Prolactin reduces dopamine which reduces libido. This is exemplified by the fact the body (in males) release prolactin after orgasm which results in the expected and natural effect of a guy rolling over and going to sleep. Just remember that for next time.
I agree with the others that you may be overtrained. I would look into taking a week or more off from doing any exercise, and listening to your body. You already mentioned that a week off does you considerably well and chronic overtraining can take a long time to come back from, depending on nutrition. And no you won't lose your muscle, and you'll actually make more gains when you start back up.
When is the last time you took some time off from exercise? And how long have you been working out consistently?
