I have followed John Durant and several other of the New York Paleo folks. In truth I am fairly jealous. So...

I have decided that a Paleo meet up makes a ton of sense for us southerners. I am new to the Jacksonville, FL area and without my local Paleo resources so I am stuck at the local whole foods (The one in mandarin). I need some local knowledge and support.

I would love to meet some Paleo folks for workouts or picnics or even camaraderie. So... there it is Jacksonville.
No phones numbers, just respond here to generate some interest and I will work on organizing something for us if "y'all" are down!

I suggest a meet-up at Singleton's in Mayport (if it hasn't fallen into the river) for gorging on fried soft shell crabs. But as a damyankee now far out of the area I will only be there in spirit. – thhq Oct 3 2011 at 20:58

I'm fairly certain that Native Sun is closed on Sundays...regardless of what their website says you might want to call them on Saturday and double check. I know there are two locations. I, personally, prefer the Baymeadows location better.

Hopefully you'll get this message before Sunday.

Correct closed on Sundays but now I know where it is! – P3christopher Sep 12 2010 at 17:13
I concur, I prefer the Baymeadows location as well however the entry to their place stinks because you have to pull a u turn every time. – paleoprimal Oct 3 2011 at 23:29

I'm from jacksonville and its great to see that there even is a paleo community there. I was literally shocked to see this post when I just opened the website (as I always am with jacksonville related things). Anyway, I'm in college now, so not around anymore, but best of luck. Definitely hope its a success!

Oh man, and how much do you guys love native sun?

Wish you were still in the area Krish, I am hoping to build a community here. – P3christopher Sep 9 2010 at 4:07

I just moved away from Jacksonville to Tally. Otherwise I'd love a meet-up.

I totally miss Native Sun. In my opinion Native Sun > Fresh Market > Whole Foods.

Good luck with the meet-up.

I'm from the North Florida area and a very interested.

Annie O, Great! I am new to North Florida although I have lived in Pensacola and Jax before. Are you in the Jax metro area? I was thinking of hitting up Native Sun this weekend on Sunday. If they have a coffee shop there or close by we could meet up there. I want to take a play from Mark's Daily Apple website and plan a picnic. What do you think? – P3christopher Sep 10 2010 at 16:46

This is EXACTLY what I meant. As a newbie to Jacksonville I was not aware of Native sun and was only using the Whole Foods near Mandarin. Now that I am aware of Native Sun it is on the list to visit this weekend!

Learned thus far: 1) Jax Paleos move away 2) Native Sun is a place to forage.

My contribution: 1) Ostrich steak at Clark's Fish Camp was AWESOME but pricey. 2) Black Creek Outfitters has excellent stuff to promote an outdoor sun worshiping lifestyle.

I intend to keep this going so lurkers can learn something as well (even if they are shy about contributing). Lord knows I lurked on this site for a long while!

Definitely check out Native Sun. I used to load up on avocados there. Organic avocado for $1 while Publix sells non-organic ones for $1.39...

BCO is where I got my Vibrams and my slackline. Right across the street is Costco. I love Costco! Buying meat and veggies in bulk saved me a ton of money.

Also there is a Farmer's Market with decent seafood/vegetable stands every Saturday/Sunday on Beach Blvd. There is another Farmer's market @ Jarboe park in Atlantic Beach, it's much smaller than the one on Beach blvd. but it's very nice.

That's all I got for now :)

I have an order in for a new set of Vibrams from BCO In fact my sprints mysteriously disappeared from my hotel room last week so I am in desperate need of replacing them. Farmers market info is great thank you. I look forward to seeing Native Sun on sunday. – P3christopher Sep 10 2010 at 16:44

Native Sun is nice and I will continue to go there. I visited the one off San Jose. Unfortunately Whole Foods (which is only .5 miles away) had a much better selection of organic produce. Native Sun looked more like a supplement store or perhaps a market that caters to vegans. The butcher counter at Whole Foods was nicely stocked and they can even order Rabbit.

New tidbit, The butcher at Whole Foods receives their grass fed beef on Sundays.

Wow - I don't know why I never googled paleo Jax before - what an idiot! I too am a believer in Paleo but don't follow it fully mainly cos I need to know more and I also need to be very mindful of my own health needs.

If you're having another meetup please let me know. Mike and I moved from the UK to Jax 4 yrs ago (retired). Live off Baymeadows and 9A. Within a mile or so of Native Sun which we are in at least twice a week - love the place. I also get fresh farm eggs and some meat from a local farm at Starke. This farm is also at Jarboe Park Green market two Saturdays a month.

I am actually from the Gainesville area but my daughter lives in the Atlantic Beach area so I am over there all the time. I pick up some items at the Fresh Market. Ward's on 23rd Ave. in Gainesville and the Mother Earth stores are good sources of Paleo foods. Rosas Farms south of Orange Lake is an excellent source for pastured eggs, meats, and now they are carrying local cheeses.

I am in Gainesville also. Wards is my favorite. I haven't heard about Rosas Farm, how are there prices? – Stu Aug 19 2011 at 1:37
Gotta give Wards respect. They still stock the REAL GT's kombucha, although now you get I.D.'d and can't buy it before 1pm on Sunday :( – FED at LiveCaveman.com Sep 19 2011 at 18:43

Hi, I recently moved here to Jacksonville. The best place to buy bulk meat and eggs is probably at one of the PX's. Want to hear some funny s*it? Im a disabled vet and disabled vets do not get commisary/px access. If anyone has a current military ID/dependent card/base stickers, let me know if you could bring me along, I could really use some stuff. Thanks.

And thanks for the tip about Native Sun, Im going to look it up right now.

There is actually a pretty large Paleo presence in the Jacksonville area with the rise of Crossfit, but like everything else in Jacksonville, spread out.

I do most of my shopping at the (Mayport) Commissary, and the organic section there is getting bigger and better every time I go in there. I am trying to nail down the logistics of sourcing grass-fed beef, and pastured pork and eggs. The Beaches Farm Market has some great stuff, and I have found a few places out near Starke that are promising, but I need to get a deep freeze. I might be interested in a meat share or going halvsies on a split side.

Check out BioMax the next time anyone is out at the beach.

Bio-Max Bio-Max is a traditional natural food store operating in Atlantic Beach since 1980. We feature a wide variety of natural and organic foods, including gluten-free alternatives. Also available are a variety of healthy snacks, and organic fruits & vegetables. We have a comprehensive supplement department as well, with friendly, knowledgeable staff dedicated to helping customers.

I found a few things there that no one else had, and they are good people.

Has anyone had experince with Community Supported Agriculture in Jax? I am looking to start up with that if it's available. It would save my wife some trips to the grocery store with a baby.32233 246-1634

Still in Jax? Know where to get grass-fed meat for less than $8/pound? – Kyle Mar 17 at 14:10

Hey guys, I stumbled across this page and I am more than willing to help in any way I can. I am an avid cross fitter and coach, I eat paleo (paleo/zone), and firmly believe in the paleo/Minimalist movement. Drop me a line!

Adam, which cross fit location are you associated with? I work right down the street from one (my office is on Prudential downtown) and I live in Oakleaf (pretty close to the Orange Park/Middleburg location). I'd love to try one out, but the price and the fear of the unknown are keeping me away. – Ali Jun 23 2011 at 19:57

FWIW, my daughter goes to the one across from NAX Jax and loves it. – paleoprimal Jul 7 2011 at 23:10

If anyone ever finds themselves a little farther south, namely the Orlando area, you're more than welcome to join The Orlando Paleo Diet Meetup Group (www.meetup.com/Orlando-Paleo-Diet-Meetup-Group).

We're in the middle of organizing a "Paleo Pot-luck" at a local park (equipped with grills of course) and the more cavemen/cavewomen the merrier!

American Renaissance, Rosas Farms just north of Ocala has pastured eggs, cheese, butter, poultry, and meats and they deliver to Jacksonville - I think to the Orange Park Mall area - once a month. They have a web site for placing an order -http://www.alrosas.com/

I will look them up! I have been to their website, I think. We live in Atlantic Beach, though. A trip to OP is rough. – MF Mar 31 2011 at 2:10

Thanks for the info everyone! I recently moved back to the first coast and this thread has been very helpful. I'd definitely be down for a meetup of some kind.

How close are you to Jacksonville? My brother Jer lives there, and he just started doing Crossfit. Y'all should connect. – Eric S Apr 28 2011 at 18:36

I don't know if you (or anyone) are still around, or still interested in getting together with people in Jacksonville. I am about to start the paleo/primal kinda thing and would love to have some people around that are into the same stuff.

Let me know. -Justin

Hows it going? I'm in Jax – Kyle Mar 17 at 14:13

Just wanted to update regarding Orlando/Central Florida area Paleo/Primal people. Our meetup is now has a respectable 50 members, but we have plenty of room to grow.

Right now it's a little tough for me because as the "organizer" I'm on the hook for the Meetup dues, but I plan on coughing up the dough to keep it going for at least another 6 months and hopefully we'll figure out how to split the dues or do some fundraising over the next few months.

I'm actually working with a local gym to see if we can hold a "Grok Feast"/Meetup to try and win a cow from MDA.
