Hi all,

Not to go too much into detail and gross you all out but i ate sweet potatoes yesterday for the first time in ages and ive been spending longer than usual on the toilet today as a result!

Does anyone else get this when eating sweet potatoes/Yams?

I just figured it was some kind of gluten intolerance thing?

Sweet Potatoes should not have any gluten. They're "safe" starches for folks who usually need/want the nutrients and energy from them.

There have been reports of sweet potatoes causing gas and bloating, some report the skin giving them issues, or differences between regular potatoes and sweet potatoes.

I personally just get full eating potatoes/sweet potatoes in general. Poops come out nicer too. Apologies for the TMI.

For me it was the fiber in a large sweetie that had me running for the terlet. They're pretty fibrous. So I just eat little ones now, no problem.

You could be intolerant to the mannitol, which is a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol (A FODMAP). Do pineapples, olives, or asparagus agree with you?

a) You haven't had it in a while and the bacteria that would eat it up have declined dramatically.

b) Congrats! You have just discovered a food sensitivity, and can proceed with greater knowledge about what works and doesn't for you diet-wise.

	I don't think that feeling constipated after eating a food means you have a sensitivity to. Soluble fiber (as in starchy vegs and rice) can be binding- just make sure you get enough fat to encourage peristalsis. – Renee Feb 16 2012 at 23:04
	For some reason I interpreted this as bouts of diarrhea, not constipation. Okay Robert, we need the TMI details. If you are backed up, it probably isn't a food sensitivity and more likely insufficient fat or water. – Happy Now Feb 16 2012 at 23:43

I've found that starches such as potatoes and sweet potatoes do not make nicely formed poop. I keep zucchini in my diet for that purpose.
