Hello all. Im in my 26th day of paleo, loving it to pieces. Even more so now that i have started including carb re-feeds once a week. Sunday being my re-feed day. In the 26 days i have been paleo i have lost 4.4kg, just under 10 pounds. Feeling great which is the main thing, and even more importantly my blood pressure is going great also, nearly needed blood pressure meds before going paleo. And at only 33 years of age, the future wasnt very promising.

My question is: When did you, and or others, start noticing a change in your appearance? I havent noticed any. But maybe its way to early to tell.

My stats are 5ft10inches-178cm, began at 97.2kgs- currently 92.8kgs. Male ofcourse :p

Any replies and or advice is welcome and appreciated.

I'd say we're all different here. I lose weight SLOWLY in my face. I've never been really big but I have fluctuated around 20 lbs over the years. I had to get pretty skin-and-bones to see hollowed cheeks and definition in my face. I just have a round face usually all the time. – ben61820 Feb 17 2012 at 14:36
Face is sometimes last for some people. I'm really glad to hear that you're doing carb refeeds. – gilliebean Feb 17 2012 at 20:17

ben61820 and gilliebean, thanx guys for the feedback. gilliebean i think the carb re-feeds are a Godsend, as they maintain leptin levels and definately serve as a treat. Sunday being my carb re-feed day. I really believe they are paramount in losing weight and maintaining sanity lol – Nick Feb 17 2012 at 23:44

i lost 10st altogether (140lbs) and looking back at pictures now the difference is massive obviously.

but yea, i as weird as it sounds i didnt notice the change happening untill i looked back at old photos

It depends more on how/how much you carry weight in your face. I have known very overweight (think 350+ lb women) with fairly slender faces and necks, and I know a lot of people who aren't technically overweight at all but have chubby faces which show every pound they gain.

I've always been very thin, but even less than 5 lbs of weight loss/gain is noticeable in my face (not in a bad way at all - but you can see it in pictures, and I see it in the mirror).

You need to have taken photos before you started so you can compare. Not sure if it is a physical or a mental thing really. Without those photos, I don't notice the change. But people started commenting to me at 10 pounds (hey you look thinner, you dieting, etc).

I think everyone is different. I lose (and gain) weight in my face very quickly. After very strict Paleo for 3-4 months, my wife told me I looked too thin so I actually added back some carbs to gain weight, and I have been overweight for years so that made me pretty happy (giggle like a school girl actually).

I was the exact same weight and height as you when I started Paleo. It took me around 4-5 months to get down to 169lbs. I've since gone back up to about 180lbs. You're losing about 1.25 lbs per week, so give it another 20 weeks and you will look like a new person.

Sorry for this answer, I'm an accountant (least Paleo profession?).

CaveDad, tahnx so much for that feedback. Its definately a lifestyle change. So excited to see myself in 4 to 5 months. – Nick Feb 17 2012 at 23:37

Think in percentages, and wait for others to comment - they will see it before you do!

You need to lose about 10% bodyweight (ideally as fat - since WEIGHT isn't the shape changer) before people will comment...

... monitor your waist measurement, not the scales! As the waist shrinks, your face will become more "gaunt", trust me!

NOTES

I was about your height, and weighed 83kg. I lost 10kg in 6 weeks effortlessly, and moved my "set point" permanently. I have remained within 2kg of 73kg since 2003, irrespective of exercise - used to run 5K, 3X a week, but stopped 2 years ago. (I will be 60 in June)

The problem is that you are always looking at your face in the mirror, after showers, grooming, etc... since you are seeing gradual changes it's fairly hard to notice.

The best way, is when you see someone you haven't seen for a few months. They will usually notice immediately.

That being said, after this past weightloss session of 40lbs or so since November, in pictures my head has remained the same size while my body appears considerably smaller. I became the kid from "So I Married an Axe Murder" with the "gargantuan heed". I also grew a giant viking beard, and that doesn't help.

One of the things I am happy about is that I did not lose that much face weight but when looking at old photo- I did. I just don't look like I got sick or survived cancer like many of my friends at work appear with their calorie counting hard excerise programs. I lost weight and added years of youth as I put it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only male who feels like my face is the last one to the weight loss party! I lost 25 lbs but my face seems like it's barely noticed.

I mean, yeah, when I look at photos from years past, I definitely have lost some facial real estate, but I REALLY wanted drawn, sunken heroin cheeks--only without the heroin.

I'm hoping all this resistant facial fat will translate into fewer wrinkles and smoother skin when I'm 70.

Everyone is definitely different. I have a cousin who was tipping the scales at 350#, 6'3", and when he started to lose weight his face was the first place to start leaning out. At around 300# he had the face of a person at his ideal weight. He has weighed ~200# for the past several years, in case anyone was curious!

I have always noticed that there seems to be a lag between weight loss and fat loss, particularly in the face (or maybe just in areas that have relatively smaller amounts of fat). To put a theory to it, almost like you lose fat from some storage area and as time goes on and your body realizes the storage area is not going to replete itself, it re-normalizes fat stores around the rest of the body. It's entirely theory but I've lost and gained a lot of weight over the years and this always seems to apply.

I agree that everyone gains/loses weight in different places- unfortunately for me, I gain weight in my face immediately! If I am 5 lbs above my comfortable, normal weight, you can see it in my face right away, and it doesn't really back off until I get back to my "comfortable normal weight". Establishing a new normal weight will take a bit of time, and you need to be easy on yourself if you don't see visible results for a little while- knowing that you are getting healthy from the inside out and your are feeling better will certainly tide you over while your physical body plays a little catch-up :)
