I have a swollen and distended abdomen all day long. It began about 4 months ago and has gotten increasingly worse recently. From the moment I wake up in the morning to when I go to bed my abdomen is swollen. It does increase a bit after eating but its still distended whether I eat a meal or not. I'm quite skinny and when I feel my abdomen its hard and bounces back when I press it, it's not squishy like fat would be so I'm not skinny fat. The only way for the distention to go away is to lay straight on my back, then the swelling completing goes away and I can see a flat stomach with definition. I'm eating the same foods now as I was months ago when my stomach wasn't distended so I don't think its a food allergy and from what I've read food allergies are acute symptoms and wouldn't produce a 24/7 stomach distention. What could be causing the distention of my stomach? Is it organs, water or air that's pushing it out and why would laying down make the distention go away?

Its really aggravating i really would appreciate any help. Thanks.

By the way I'm a Male in my mid 20s if that is any info needed.

Have you been to see a doctor about it? – Matt Feb 18 2012 at 12:42
You say you are pretty skinny...height, weight? What's your usual daily diet? – Blossom1 Feb 18 2012 at 15:18

Seriously, go see a doctor. It sounds like ascites to me. I'm not a doctor though. You just need to see one.

Sounds like bloating from air - I am like that most of the time myself. Belly like a balloon, night and day. However it could be from any number of causes.

Unless you have recently added something to your diet you haven't eaten in years OR you are still eating grains and/or lots of sugar/fructose/fruits or dairy and your body is now slowly reacting more and more to it....go see a doctor asap because these symptoms don't sound funny.

Were you on any antibiotics in the weeks prior to this happening? I went through something simular not long after finishing a course of them. I understood it to be like a yeast infection in the belly. Doc had to give me another script to make it stop. Probiotics and diet weren't enough. Doc said it's very common after using certain biotics.
