Hi hackers,

some sources say, people with dairy allergy/sensitivity should stay away from ghee. But I don't know anybody who has ever had issues with it.

I have some weird reactions and I'm not quite sure whether it's the ghee, or the bananas I've introduced recently.

Pure butterfat shouldn't cause anything but a satisfied stomach, right? Since it's widely consumed in here: Anyone ever had an adverse reaction to ghee?

EDIT:

For this kind of question it's actually better to get as few answers as possible - and indeed: out of 85 people only one has ever reacted to ghee. Now it's quite likely that the bananas are the culprit. Thank you all! :)

UPDATE:

After several tests I've figured out that ghee makes me slightly tired 2 hours after intake. And if I eat it every day, my skin gets red and unclean. But once in a while it's okay. So I guess it's not completely safe for everyone...

I react to whey and don't tolerate casein well, but I do fine with ghee it seems. No obvious reactions. My skin didn't look very well on the left side, but that could be the result of too high retinol supplementation + frequent liver. I love ghee btw, so tasty. – Korion Feb 18 2012 at 14:57

It's really delicious, and I couldn't live without it :) But since I've added it again (and the bananas) I feel weak and lightheaded. But great to hear you don't have troubles with it – Thomy Feb 18 2012 at 15:02

Bananas are extremely allergenic : they're often grown in deficient soils so they're "stressed plants". They're also high in serotonin. – Korion Apr 9 2012 at 7:53

Yes, I reacted with extreme delight when I first smelled it and cooked my eggs in it.

Haha, +1 for capitalizing on the ambiguity of the question – Silverspeed Feb 19 2012 at 2:18

I had a reaction to pastured butter that I clarified myself with an eye towards purity over yield, as well as to some commercial ghee. I have celiac disease (with casein intolerance cross-reactivity) and lactose intolerance. When I tried the ghee/clarified butter I was still figuring out issues of cross-contamination, and I was on the more sensitive side, but I haven't tried it again now that my gut is a bit more healed up.

Strangely, and I can't figure this one out, I tolerated ice cream and yogurt much better than non-clarified butter, so my experiences may not generalize too well. But for people in general I wouldn't rule out ghee as a source of problems. Dairy allergy is possible, and even trace amounts of protein left in the ghee could be problematic.

I would be more inclined to think it the bananas, especially if not very ripe. My son has some trouble with them. And if you have gut dysbiosis issues they can exacerbate them.

I second that. I don't like ghee too much but tolerate it very well. Bananas on the other hand... – ulcova Feb 18 2012 at 15:01
I don't tolerate bananas at all either, though I haven't tried in a while. It may be the sugar or it may be the amines or something else I don't know about. – Korion Feb 18 2012 at 15:49
Bananas make me fart really badly. All 4 of my kids get diarrhea from them. We are all dairy intolerant but do well on ghee. – Jeannine Apr 9 2012 at 8:27

I am allergic to dairy and do react badly to ghee, sniffles, headache, rash... ick I know. It's so delicious I wish soooo much that I could have it.

Well, that's bad news. Are you allergic to casein, or whey protein? Do you know that? – Thomy Feb 19 2012 at 8:29
My doc and myself think both but mainly casein. We're pretty sure the migraines I used to get have more to do with casein though. She (my doc) really wants me to give raw dairy a go just to experiment, I'm just too afraid my migraines will come back. – Olivia Feb 19 2012 at 16:08
There's the theory that especially milk homogenization breaks down the milk proteins making it easier for them to cross the intestinal wall and reach the blood stream. So raw dairy might be bit better, but not sure how much better. Anyway, thanks for your response :) – Thomy Feb 19 2012 at 17:57

I'm intolerant to dairy, and I think I react poorly to ghee. I haven't subjected myself to a strict elimination to make SURE ghee is the culprit, but I think it is.

EDIT: Good news, I was wrong! And am now slathering ghee on everything.

Congrats! :) Have you found out what was the actual trigger? – Thomy Mar 18 2012 at 19:20
Nooooo. On the not so good-newsy side. Except it could be that I ate too many nuts on that same day. – Celine Mar 18 2012 at 19:27

It is possible to react to ghee. Although ghee contains far less casein than butter, it may still contain traces... I personally can only have 1 tsp. of ghee at a time, otherwise I get a pretty bad reaction... :(

I react badly to ghee and bananas. I'm fairly certain ghee has yeast/histamine/whatever and that is the issue in my case. Bananas - phenols, yeast, maybe something else.

My son is allergic to milk. Every drop of it. He cannot tolerate Milk on his skin either. However he eats plenty of Ghee daily. no limits on Ghee.

Hi, thanks for your response! Do you know which part of the milk is the trigger for his allergy? Is it casein, or rather the whey protein fraction? – Thomy Apr 9 2012 at 8:24

I don't know if ghee is causing me a problem now, though I know that other dairy does.

I purchase my ghee from pureindianfoods.com and I really enjoy it and hope I can tolerate it.

I purchased the cultured ghee -its flavor is amazing. They have quite a few articles on their

site that address paleo diet as well as food sensitivities (Lactose and casein intolerance).

Some of the reviews of the ghee on their site were from people who usually couldn't tolerate

dairy, but were fine with PIF ghee.

Here's an article from the site: http://www.pureindianfoods.com/dairy-intolerance-a/259.htm

Casein triggers my psoriasis very badly. I haven't consumed dairy in 3 years. I was quite nervous trying out ghee. But I have zero reaction to it. Unfortunately I am not crazy the stuff, ... it's just okay. I only use it when frying up eggs. Perhaps I've lost the taste of anything butter after not eating any for so long??

My joints swell up when I have ghee. Not as bad compared to other foods, but I still react negatively to it.

I get immediate pressure in my head and behind my eyes after consuming grass-fed ghee and after about 10 hours, headaches. Even 1/8th of a tsp will do it. I don't get it.
