Alcohol has very alcohol-like effects on mood
Given this delicate balance, are you going to drink on the evening of December 31st, 2011? If so, how much? Veteran paleohacker, Stabby, has written a treatise on "Mitigating the deleterious effects of ethanol on health".
I'm not a big drinker, but I do enjoy hacking nutrition and lifestyle. If you are planning on drinking this weekend, would you ever consider hacking your drinking?

I don't drink but hypothetically if I did, I would definitely employ the strategies he mentions.
The Plan: I have a teeny tiny bottle of contraband hard cider that I will be quaffing with my dog on NYE whilst watching too many movies and snacking on scandalous treats. Not very exciting I agree but there is a method behind the chill madness:
I'm Polar Bear(ing) it up on NYD and if I get drunk then it'll be way too easy to bail on tossing myself into the Atlantic Ocean by way of Coney Island. Right now the estimated water temp is 33° not counting windchill. "Oh no.. my head hurts.. no ocean.. mmm pillow." See? Look how easy that was and I'm currently just drinking tea.
Now, afterwards, there will be warming whiskey toddy action so The Stabby's most excellent Three Way Recommend of "prior/during/next day" will be utilized and employed, just put into play a day after everyone else. With bacon.
Ummm... so that means i can get shit-faced on patron and have minimal effects? awesome.
So when's the post coming out about how to avert STD's? I'm gonna need a supplement list for that pronto!

As for me, maybe a glass of wine, maybe a few shots of tequila. Patron Silver was my favorite before Paleo and it still is.
Weeeelllllll. On Christmas day I drank an entire bottle of bucks fizz and half a bottle of Tia Maria "on the rocks". This triggered a migraine on Christmas night. Bleh. I will however be drinking again on NYE, this time a nice bottle of red (a non expensive one, I feel I need to add, being that it's vulgar to boast about the price of your wine) and will be consulting stabby's excellent blog post for sure!
The last time I drank at a New Years' event was 2008/2009 when I drank 3/4 of a 750ml bottle of Crown Royal in less than three hours. Suffice it to say I did not have a good night.
Went almost two years without liquor until October 2010 when I walked into a Halloween party with a help-yourself open bar. About 7-8 drinks and a few hours later I was outside trying to give it all back while hunched over in a chair next to the bonfire. Several hours after that, I somehow woke up on the cold wood floor of the host's study without a clue as to how I got there.
And that's the last time I have/will touch liquor. I switched to beer-only from that point on, and was even rather sparing with that for almost another year. I finally quit it all for good in August, just a few months before I started Paleo in November. Now that I'm off of wheat/grains completely, I honestly don't think I'll ever reach for alcohol again. I used to live for that numb, dizzy feeling you get from a good buzz, but now just the thought of it starts to turn my stomach. I'm done.
I've always been a live and let live kinda guy and that hasn't changed, but for me, n=1, I simply don't see any necessary benefit to drinking alcohol. I was a regular partaker for about 10 years and it's definitely something I should have done without.
And I must admit it does surprise me a bit to see so much toleration of it in Paleo discussions, though I do understand it. If I had found Paleo a few years ago instead of now, I'd probably be singing a different song.
No judgment from me for those who want to, but my "hack" is this: Just give it up. You're already doing so much for your health having let go of everything else to be Paleo, so why not go a step further and lose the drink? Personally, I'd rather eat pizza and Krispy Kremes before I'd touch more booze. But if you insist, I would simply suggest that you take full responsibility for the decision to do so and let it be on your terms completely. No party games, peer pressure, smooth talkers, etc. just take it easy and enjoy your drink if you like.
I've made more bad decisions under the influence of alcohol than I care to think about at this point in my life, and some of them have cost me dearly. From my perspective, I have to discourage it.
I am doing a Whole30 in January, so I WILL be having a last hurrah for NYE. I am hoping to avoid a hangover with Stabby's tips! Usually if I stick with one relatively simple drink, I can have 7 or 8 drinks (vodka or tequila with a combo of soda and a little juice works pretty well) and feel okay-ish the next day.
This year I'm not attempting to keep up with someone significantly younger than me on New Year's Eve's Eve. That in itself will go a long way. But really, no matter how hammered I get on New Year's Eve, the traditional pork & sauerkraut dinner on New Year's Day will help to cleanse me of any built up toxins.
