Well, I'm sure by now you've seen the ads for the upcoming Paleo Summit (which starts a week from today). The lineup of 23 speakers is certainly a paleo who's who. I presume the plan for the summit is to make each video free for 24 hours. And after that, they'll all be behind a pay wall, right?

So my question is, what do folks think about hacking each video here on PH? If we had enough folks who would watch a video and then share their hack here, it'd be a great resource for the community. What do you think?

Update, 2/21: Hmm. Folks seemed reluctant to sign up to be reviewers, so I'll take the hint. Instead, I'll go ahead and create community wiki posts for each speaker the day before their "event" and folks can just comment.

I think a detailed hack of each talk would be great. Let the Paleo Summit Hack-a-thon begin! – FED at LiveCaveman.com Feb 19 2012 at 14:31

See below. My bad!

Thanks for your enthusiasm. Been finding a lot of negativity about the summit floating around on net. Had blinders on.

You're gonna dig the summit! :)

I believe there has been an unfortunate missunderstanding here. In the case of this site the term "hack" is being used to mean more in terms of "discuss". – Matt Feb 19 2012 at 18:10

Sent Sean a message using the form on his site to explain the misunderstanding! – Dragonfly Feb 19 2012 at 18:16

I hope at least one of the presenters mentions the Squatty Potty. – Kamal Feb 20 2012 at 8:27

I apologize for jumping to conclusions earlier. My bad! Enjoy the summit.

Sean, you have misunderstood. By 'hacking' we mean discussing. So all beth is proposing is a discussion thread for each video. Nothing to do with copyright violation. – sarah-ann Feb 19 2012 at 18:08

Word! Got it. I need to work on my internet lingo. :) – Sean Croxton Feb 19 2012 at 18:27

Sorry for the unnecessary angst ;). – Beth-WeightMaven Feb 19 2012 at 19:32

Sean, you shouldn't be so concerned - its good that what is said in the interviews is discussed. Not everything the speakers say is correct. A lot of them go overboard with how much they blame carbs for weight gain. – Sue Feb 19 2012 at 23:07

I'm already registered for the summit. I think some in-depth hacks of each talk are totally worth it.

And yes, each talk is free for 24 hours, then you have to pay. But, if you pay the upgrade for your own files of the talks, you get transcripts and a few ebooks (including the big Whole30 guide) as well. For some people, it may be helpful.

In either case having more discussion here would be a plus for me. I'm all in favor.

Thanks! I was thinking along the lines of one post here per talk, each being part review, part discussion each linking to the upgrade. Is it too much to suggest a volunteer for the primary review for each? – Beth-WeightMaven Feb 19 2012 at 15:24
I think that could work. Should the posters upgrade though? – Caleb the Hobbit Feb 19 2012 at 15:36

I was thinking that the posters would be on the hook to watch the initial viewing carefully enough to write a review (not an overly detailed synopsis) and others who watched initially would chime in. It's certainly fair that folks should either watch during the initial viewing or upgrade themselves to get all the details. – Beth-WeightMaven Feb 19 2012 at 15:42
Aha! Thank you, Caleb, for mentioning the free-then-pay thing. I haven't paid much attention to the paleo summit thing, but have idly wondered what the money-making model could be. – redberry Feb 19 2012 at 17:14
@redberry: he details it on the website, see here: paleosummit.com/affiliateinfo – Caleb the Hobbit Feb 19 2012 at 17:39

Great idea Beth. So are you willing to coordinate that? I guess we just need to make sure a new thread is started each day for each new presentation? Make sure to tag them Paleo Summit along with the subject and presenter's name.

Thanks Shari! What if I posted the line up above and asked for a volunteer for each speaker to create the thread? Would that work? – Beth-WeightMaven Feb 19 2012 at 15:28
Excellent community project. Go for it! – Shari Bambino Feb 19 2012 at 18:21

well, you can be a reviewer then..... – The Loon Feb 25 2012 at 22:21

I just registered. While I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough to be a 'reviewer', I definitely want to put my vote in for the more active PaleoHackers to get in on it! I think it could be a really valuable collection of discussions, especially for people new to Paleo.

One of my favorite expressions I use in teaching is to remind the person who is explaining a topic to "put the cookies on the bottom shelf where the kiddies can get them". I know we do not eat cookies but I have been saying that for decades and do not plan to stop.

Sean, you put the cookies where all the kiddies can reach them. Each interview is wonderfully edited, clear (audio as well as content), not too long, not too short, and jam packed with vital and useful material.

Kudos!

Is it just me? I'm a little put off by the commercial aspect of the Paleo Summit. Free then you have to pay? Personally I don't think that's a good way to build credibility for a concept that is already under scrutiny by the collective wisdom of the general population. If these speakers have something good to say, let it be available to all, forever.

Sorry, but education isn't free. We seem to be under this everything-free-all-the-time mindset from the internet allowing forums like this to exist. But when organizing something like a summit, he has travel costs, honorariums (possibly) for the speakers, etc. I think it's kind of cool that he's giving 24 hours of free access. – miked Feb 20 2012 at 17:08
Well, I don't think there are travel costs (if the clips are a clue, looks like the major presentations are essentially video slide presentations of podcasts) and I'd bet there aren't honorariums (presenters likely get a cut of those who buy access after the 24 hrs). That said, I don't think it's unreasonable for either Sean or the speakers to monetize their time or expertise, and that the 24 hours free access is great. Note: this kind of summit isn't Sean's idea ... there are lots of folks doing this on all sorts of topics. – Beth-WeightMaven Feb 20 2012 at 17:42

Kudos to those who choose to offer their life's work for free to the world, they are magnanimous beyond compare. But that should be their decision, and if they ask for adequate compensation for their labors, they should not be derided for such fair intentions. Providing value in return for value, during the course of a transaction of services, should be the default mode of commerce. The modern idea that everything should be made available for free is a ridiculous notion, and pays no respect to the time and energy required of those who become educated for other's benefit. – David Csonka Feb 21 2012 at 21:28

The Paleo Summit is 100% free for a period of time. Yes, the videos are available for only 24 hours but don't you think that one should earn money for putting in hours and hours into something like this? I do. – Primal Toad Feb 29 2012 at 17:29
