I am past week one on Paleo (yay!) and have felt relatively fabulous. Day 4 was awful, but thanks to some great advice from fellow PaleoHacks, that changed quickly.

I love to bake - bread, cookies, cakes, you name it - I'm kind of known for it amongst the office and the family. That has been the toughest thing to change since deciding to go Paleo and be grain-free. I kept telling myself that eventually I would allow gluten-free 'treats' - but not for a long time.

Well, I had the most insane craving for chocolate yesterday afternoon. Pure, primal, I-will-do-anything-for-a-damn-bite-of-chocolate craving. I spent hours (it felt like it) in the health food store looking at ingredients on different brownie mixes and finally bought one that was gluten, wheat, soy, corn, potato, peanut, tree nut, dairy and casein free.

Not even an hour after baking and consuming a brownie (it was just 'meh'), I had stomach cramps and horrible diarrhea.

Ok...was I a bad girl? I don't see how ingredients like evaporated cane juice, sweet brown rice flour, ducth cocao, tapioca flour, arrowroot flour, salt and xanthan gum could have that kind of effect on me.

How do past baked-good-aholics handle these cravings on Paleo?

I don't buy mixes. I see them as for people who are allergic to these things, so will to eat the faux version. There are plenty of recipes for yummy goodies that will allow you to skip the arrowroot flour, xanthan gum, sugar and rice flour. I would definitely suggest a good 20 or 30 days of eating nothing with an ingredient list (meat, veggies, and fruit only). Check out www.everydaypaleo.com – josh Feb 19 2012 at 21:22
gluten-free mixed give me stomach cramps too. Way worse than actual gluten. Regular tapioca is fine. Even rice flour seems fine (though I don't eat that much of it.) The mixes are deadly. A flourless chocolate cake would work much better, or a small square of green and blacks! – Evolutionarypsy Feb 19 2012 at 21:41
yes, make paleo brownies on your own, from scratch. those mixes do a number on me, too. – Sarah Feb 20 2012 at 3:23
by the way, this is what I make: mypaleocrockpot.blogspot.com/2011/10/… (works well in the oven, too.) – Sarah Feb 20 2012 at 3:24
Thank you for the links and the recipes! @Sarah, I added your blog to my favorite bar! :) – Megan Feb 20 2012 at 4:51

Give yourself a brake, one week isn't do or die, Take a few months to allow the body to adjust. Cold turkey will just set you back. If you were doing this for a year or so, it would be different. Don't beat yourself, one week didn't kill you or make you healthier. Follow some guidelines and do it 80/20 til you feel that 90/10 is better.

eat some real chocolate! Darker is better of course, but there is NO substitute!
