When I drink hot tea it seems to have a diuretic effect. Does this dehydrate the body if your peeing a lot from tea?

I would think it would depend on what kind of tea. Caffeinated? Herbal? I think you would have to drink a lot of caffeinated tea to have it dehydrate you. My opinion is that is does NOT dehydrate you and the diuretic affect is not harmful versus a glass of water. – LastingOne Feb 20 2012 at 20:39
I generally drink green tea or jasmine tea. – primallykosher Feb 20 2012 at 22:44

LO, thanks for the link. Very interesting. That does refute the common belief that tea is diuretic. – PaleoGran Feb 21 2012 at 0:00
You're welcome, it was very enlightening for me as well! – LastingOne Feb 21 2012 at 6:20

Most teas, caffeinated especially, but also a lot of herbs, have a diuretic effect on the body whether they are consumed hot or cold. This means that for every ounce of tea consumed, your body expels an ounce and a half of water. So just be sure to drink extra water to make up for the diuretic effect...this goes for coffee, juice and sugary beverages as well.

According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, your body starts to rely on the concentrating power of your kidneys to retain water if you're beginning to become dehydrated. If your urine is light, then you should be well hydrated :)!

Hot liquids process through the body faster than cold liquids. Just ask any tech who's ever done an ultrasound for which you need a full bladder. :)

I spent 6 weeks only drinking tea and coffee... if they dehydrated I'd be dead.

You need salt if you're increasing fluid intake too.
