Heribert Watzke talks about cooking and its impact on human evolution. i did find it interesting, but not insightful. did i miss something?

When I saw this the first time I had also been reading about serotonin receptors in the gut and depression treatment that same week, and my brain was like a pin ball machine watching this if only because I hadn't seen anyone discussing it yet in this format. Yeah, he doesn't go that deep into it, but added just enough to what I was learning at the time to make me pretty excited. Being the nerd I am I even got a t-shirt made that says, "Coquo Ergo Sum" for a chef friend. – Happy Now Feb 21 at 5:04
Although...the opening bit about asking audience members to turn to their neighbor and confirming that they don't have K-9 teeth didn't make any sense to me though. I've got a good set of sharp chompers and I do enjoy using them to rip rare meat off of the bone when I'm not worried about being too ladylike. – Happy Now Feb 21 at 10:35
i found that comment ridiculous also, but i decided to let it go because i figured he was trying for a lead in on why we are optimized to cooked food. perhaps my wtf impression stems from the fact that he did not connect that idea to the brain in the gut in a meaninful way. – sage_ Feb 21 at 13:42
He didn't. I think it was just an intro the idea of a brain-gut connection even existing. 2 years ago that was still being debated, and for us now, it is kinda old hat, and we want to get to the meat of it and how it works. – Happy Now Feb 21 at 22:04
What is "cocivore"? – Warren D Mar 20 at 6:30

The brain in the gut . . . dang that guy has a big, erm, brain! :P

Still, was good stuff to watch for a primer that there is even a connection.

i've since heard (one of the Paleo Summit talks?) that by cooking food humans were able to extract more energy from food which led to 60% reduction in the size of the digestive system and the energy savings redirected to the brain which increased brain size. that doesn't really sound like a brain inthe gut though. – sage_ Mar 6 at 4:21

Well I might listen harder if he looked healthier. I think he should consume more meat.

I will check this out later. I've always been facinated by the gut brain axis.

The vegan flash mob was funny....silly vegans :) Its a lay lecture and only 15 minutes long. Perhaps if he had more time he could have expanded on some of his research and theory. Dunno.
