My question is whether there are any particular foods to concentrate on in order to promote healthy sperm production? My husband is post-vasectomy reversal. He doesn't get "tested" until May but in the meantime we wondered if there were any specific foods!
I'm guessing the general answer to my question is probably that we are doing pretty well eating Paleo anyway. I know there are some multi-vit tablets that concentrate on this but we're not really into supplements and would rather gain the nutrients from food.
i hear Maca powder is pretty good.
not really a food tho, but not a "processed" supplement either.
it is a herb & an adaptogen, so don't go overboard with it, as it may "hurt" your adrenals, especially if used chronically in higher doses.
personally i take 1/3 tsp per day (about 1 gram) in the morning (taken at night may impact sleep).
i believe it has a similar function/effect to tribulus, but probably works out a lot cheaper to buy (& may be better?).
....& foods that are high in Zinc, ie. Oysters
Hmmm... sperm production. Like most of our "self-experiments" we rely on hearsay, rumor and attempts to comprehend scientific studies. I imagine, that for a real test, you would have to increase, all by itself without altering any other diet matter, a certain food, herb, supplement, etc. and then ejaculate into a beaker for lab analysis and sperm count, maybe on a daily basis. Then change the supplement and repeat. Hard data is hard to come by (no puns intended, although after reading that sentence I had to chuckle just the slightest bit).
I once wrote on another forum about something that worked for me, I forget exactly what the subject was, and another poster, in a fit of ironic sarcasm wrote something like, "Right, so we rely on personal experience of others to guide us". Funny, my reaction was, that is one of the greatest godsends of the internet, listening to the personal experience of other real humans, instead of the reactions of lab rats in a laboratory setting.
Here's another thing I have found. It is so difficult , for me at least, to isolate one unique factor in my diet and lifestyle that has had a certain effect. Maybe its my own impatience and use of a shotgun technique.
That was my introduction. Now to the personal details. I take daily Ashwaganda. Rhodiola, Maca, Salvia, Silymarin and Gymnema Sylvestre along with Horny Goatweed (60% icariin). Now, I'm a type II diabetic whose sex life was in the toilet before going Paleo; at the moment I am able to have sex with orgasm daily, IF I want to... I don't do it, but it is now possible for me. This may not in any way equate to actual sperm count, but it may count for something.
Did I mention? I am 65 years old.
Anything rich in zinc (which is a big part of the reason I think oysters cause that "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" reaction when ordered on a date).
Most foods that are considered aphrodisiacs for men are likely to contain something to enhance virility.
The pat answer would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clomifene , say 25mgs on Monday and Thursday. But even in this low dose this might make him weepy and emotional n' shit. I would go here and search for sperm, fertility, etc.
I know ginger and zinc should help; there are others...
So time for the results of the Macca Powder experiment as suggested above by daz.... 1. In July 2012 the sperm count was half a million - not very good at all but at least it demonstrated that the vasectomy reveral worked. 2. Following these results my husband took 4 x Macca Powder capsules per day along with 2 x Freeze Dried Oyster Capsules with added zinc (shipped over from NZ). 3. We were quite busy working and travelling and didn't get around to another sperm test. Instead we just decided to start "trying" anyway. I was also keeping track of my ovulation. 4. Quite amazingly we conceived on our very first try in October 2012.... Now due in July!
So I would happily suggest Macca Powder and Oyster Capsules/Zinc to anyone wanting to improve sperm count.
