spouse is overweight, and not paleo. i would like him to try some vit d, but he will only take it if it is not a gelcap. Is it ok to take a powder type pill, along with a smidgen of any kind of fat/oil?

You could use a vitamin D spray too, though he probably will like that even less. – Korion Feb 21 2012 at 8:03

I use Biotics Bio-D-Mulsion Forte.

1 tiny drop has 2000 I.U.s.

The ingredients other than the D are water, gum arabic, and sesame oil.

You could make a smoothie & add the drops. – Dragonfly Feb 21 2012 at 17:04

I believe gelcaps or drops (containing oil) are preferable, but feel free to take tabs and see what response you get on blood tests...

Does it matter how you take vitamin D?

I get many letters about vitamin D absorption. “Should I take it with food?” “It is a fat soluble vitamin, so shouldn’t I take it with fat?” “Should I take it with a meal?” “Is it absorbed if I take it on an empty stomach?”
