Please only answer my question if you have constructive input (I know that NONE is the best answer. I know that it is bad for me. I know that there are better options).

So if I am out with my friends and decide that I want a mixed drink (I dont drink beer/gluten anymore), am I better off with artificial sweeteners (diet) or sugar (soda and/or juices)? I am guessing bar juice is about the lowest quality possible and from concentrate, so basically sugar water like soda. When I get back from the bars I will typically have a bunch of bacon and eggs or something of that nature.

TL;DR-

  1. Would I be better off with artificial sweetener or sugar for a night of drinking?

  2. Do I want to request a splash of club soda in a normally non-carbonated (cran vodka, screwdriver) drink to help increase the effects (CO2 helps alcohol get into blood faster) and reduce the amount I would need to consume to reach desired effects?

what's your goal- low calorie, low sugar/carb, or just going for the most nutrition out of every bite/drink? I bet you can figure out which corresponds to each of the 3 options you list. – Chris Feb 21 2012 at 20:36

This is funny because I struggled with this same question. I went through a progression of limey seltzers and crappy well tequila until I just went out and bought a flask and started filling it with my own "top shelf" tequila. Now I order a club soda and hit the flask in the restroom. I know it's a bit unfair to the bar, but I'm such a cheap date now LOL – Laura Feb 22 2012 at 1:27
I agree with Laura about ordering top shelf so you wont get a hangover, but that is totally wrong to bring in your own flask. Its not just cheap but just wrong and classless. Its like the trashy people at our bar who steal the copper mugs for the mules. A better idea is to get to know the bartender or owner so you can get free drinks. – monaLisa Feb 22 2012 at 15:55

I don't know your goals and such but tequila, seltzer, ice with a squeeze of lime is a good "go to" drinkie if you want to keep an eye on what you're imbibing.

Edit ---> For your three questions IMO: Diet Soda - no. Real Soda - no unless it's a Moscow Mule, or whatever, as the ginger ales I see in my bars are only a few ingredients - ginger ale mixes really well with all booze. Juice: yes. From low to high on the sugar scale: grapefruit, orange, apple, pineapple, grape <--- End Edit

When I do go out and want a drink it's:

  • Rocks
  • Neat
  • Seltzer

I will only incorporate juice if it's a poncey bar that's muddling or will fresh squeeze - I live in NY so that's quite prevalent. Or I'll just stick with a nice seltzer, ice, and a couple dashes of bitters.

Note: I drink like a gun totin' dame so it's usually neat: bourbon or rye, on occasion vodka on rocks or a good martini :) Oh! That all gets thrown under the bus if champagne or prosecco appear, which makes me swoon in happiness.

I'll drink to that! Bourbon or scotch whiskey for me - depending on the quality, I may have an ice cube or two with it. It doesn't need a mixer beyond that. +1 for "gun totin' dame". – Ralph Furley Feb 21 2012 at 20:12

I second all the suggestions here about straight up drinking or seltzer (especially the norcal margarita), but to answer your specific question, and speaking only to my own personal preference, if I had to choose between sugar and artificial sweetener, I'll choose sugar every time. I'd rather consume good old sugar than some strange chemical concoction that tastes like death (until you get addicted to it, at which time you convince yourself that it's the nectar of life).

Im a bar owner and there are some bars that have decent options, but not all. We have home made ginger beer, fresh squeezed juices and organic Liquor. Look for bars that serve those things and support them with your $$. Also many bars make drinks with egg whites, if they are a good bar ask for a Ramos Fizz, without the simple syrup or cream. 1 ½ oz gin ½ oz fresh lemon juice ½ oz fresh lime juice 1 oz simple syrup 2 oz heavy cream 1 egg white Few drops of orange flower water Top off with soda

Ask the bartender to make you something special without soda or juices that are not fresh. If I am in a pinch and I am out I will order a flavored vodka like Blueberry vodka and soda. In a real pinch I like gin and soda water with extra limes. There are also flavored bitters that some bars carry. You can also get a Tom Collins, but ask for fresh lemon juice and no sugar.

I just had a couple more ideas. A dirty martini (olive juice) might be nice. Also another popular drink these days is Whiskey with a pickle juice back. Sounds gross, but people love it. – monaLisa Feb 22 2012 at 15:50

why not straight up?

Why not use soda/seltzer water as the mixer? It's the least offensive mixer you'll find. And every bar has it.

agreed that club soda/neat is the best choice. That said, if you need something to mask the flavor (as I would also), what about grapefruit juice? I don't have any science to back me up here, but it's relatively low in sugars, and has a very strong flavor, so you wouldn't need a ton to get maximum benefit.

thank you for a suggestion that fell into one of the 3 categories I actually asked about, I would love to try grapefruit with gin or vodka – Dan Feb 21 2012 at 20:24

On that note- I could also probably try gin, seltzer, and lime juice? Or something like that? Maybe vodka, seltzer, and lemon juice? – Dan Feb 21 2012 at 20:26
Grapefruit juice and vodka is a very interesting combination -- the bitterness of each counteracts the other a bit. – Matt B Feb 21 2012 at 20:27
My go to drink at the bars is a greyhound, which is (I believe) vodka and grapefruit juice. You could experiment with lots of lime, soda and vodka, which might also be nice. – HA Feb 21 2012 at 20:30
The added benefit of the grapefruit juice is that you also get a stronger kick from the alcohol, so you will require fewer drinks to feel it. Gotta be careful though, 1 greyhound will hit you about the same as 2-3 normal drinks, especially if you have an empty stomach. – Happy Now Feb 21 2012 at 20:34

Of the choices you lay out, a juice (assuming you can check and make sure they didn't add HFCS to it) is probably your best bet. We don't know what the artificial sweeteners are doing to people. They certainly aren't helping anyone get thin, and they are extremely novel in terms of food, which in turn means they are likely the worst thing you can do. If you use soda, you get whatever crap they put into that, and more sugar than you actually need to sweeten a mixed drink.

If you like little bubbles in your drink, have fun, but I am not sure that it is optimal strategy, though it would probably be fine by itself. You are already talking about playing around with sweet + alcohol, which for me, = trouble. Ideally, keep blood sugar stable and hit your liver with small but steady stream of alcohol. The sweet and bubbly approach may lead to an unfortunate loss of inhibitions, motor control, and the ability to say no to neolithic foods on offer at wee hours in the morning at one of those 24hr breakfast joints.

Vodka soda, or something like Robb Wolf's NorCal Margarita.

vodka + seltzer + double lime + ice.

or tequila shots.

Go for tequila, sparkling water and lime on the rocks. You'll be in heaven and bonus, no hangover!

What about a different tack here, and go with something like a White Russian. Still gonna be sweetish, but the half and half will add enough fat to blunt the sugar blast a bit.

Piña colada?
Rum + coconut cream + pineapple juice.

  • Rum, a nice hard liquor without wheat side-effects
  • Coconut cream for your saturated fat (to heal your liver after the alcohol's done)
  • Pineapple juice for your bromelain (anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-tumor)

Honestly, I go with exactly the drink that looks yummiest, and only order one. I have a cocktail on rare occasions, so I don't worry about it.

I find that juice is the best mixer for me. I don't actually like really sweet drinks and feel gross with regular soda, but would rather have the sugar than diet soda. Actually, I get hangovers 100% of the time when I have diet soda, but rarely with fruit juice mixers. I also almost always feel ill after a diet soda drink.

I think the best option would be having liquor neat, but mixing with orange, lime, or lemon juice is pretty decent.

Now, one of my absolute FAVORITE summer drinks is gin and tonic. I'd much rather go with the regular tonic than diet. So I guess my ranking is 1) fruit juice (except maybe cranberry juice cocktail, which has added sugars), 2) regular soda, 3)diet soda

*Of course this is all my personal experience!

You might want to keep your eyes peeled for Q tonic. It has less the half the sugar of regular tonic water and tastes really fresh. – jj Feb 22 2012 at 15:36

Definitely NOT diet soda. I don't drink soda and I like the taste of the liquor I drink, so I'd always go either neat or with soda water.

Just remember that the thing about alcohol is that it effects you like sugar, so to the extent you can stay away from adding any MORE sugar, that's ideal.

My go-to liquor drink: Kettle one and water, no garnish. It may sound gross but I prefer it to the seltzer. With a nice quality vodka which is supposed to be tasteless anyway, I find it's refreshing... and hydrating too! Just TRY it!!

I don't find Ketel One to be tasteless, a little sweet actually, but I like it's taste enough that it's my first choice for vodka and one I'm happy to sip neat. – cerement Feb 26 2012 at 18:23
