What has been the most difficult thing to give up since going Paleo? How did you do it? Do you miss it? Did you find an alternative that gives you equal amounts of joy?

Pizza (not very Paleo) replaced with more sex (very Paleo). Sometimes things are just that simple. |

Sugar in general was very hard to give up, and it's the thing that most often causes me to relapse to unhealthy eating. I still haven't quite found the solution to that. However, I have found that my taste changed after several months on paleo. I love black coffee after years of taking it with cream and sugar. I also never liked dark chocolate before eating paleo, but now I prefer it to that sugary mess called milk chocolate. I guess neither of those things is strictly paleo, but it just goes to show that making little tweaks in your indulgences can help you stay closer to the right path. |

I miss popcorn so much!! I used to eat it all the time at home and definitely every time I went to the movies!! I also really miss rice, because I was used to eating it almost daily after living in Japan for 6 years. I can't say that I've been able to find a replacement for either of them, but I miss them less and less as time passes... but I would still love to tear into a big bag of buttery salty popcorn at the movies! Anyone with ideas for replacements, please let me know! haha |

Ice cream! No, I didn't try to replace it. I do fine with dairy, so I occasionally indulge in a little bit of homemade vanilla or strawberry ice cream (usually made with about half the sugar). Sometimes when I really crave it, blueberries in cream or coconut cream will suffice. I don't really want to eat it very often, but I'm okay with the occasional cheat as long as I'm mostly Paleo, most of the time. Edit: Oh, and hot, buttered corn on the cob! And yes, I still eat this a few times a summer. I can't resist those farmers who pull into the gas station and sell it out of the back of their pick-ups! |

A lot of things were only hard to give up in the short term, but not hard at all now. The only things that have been sticky are Diet Coke and chocolate. I'm still not quite over those two, but the rest just slid away. I don't even have interest in bread, pasta, cheese, etc. If I had to eat it, I suppose I could, but there's no interest or charge there. I think for most of us, most things are like that, but there are often a few last sticky items that are differently difficult to say goodbye to. |
